Role Summary The AVP, Principal Software Engineer craves working in a hands‑on system design and architecture environment and leads by example to ensure time‑sensitive projects are completed on schedule and to specifications. The role requires deep expertise in solution and event‑driven architecture, microservices, cloud technologies, and the ability to influence and lead a team.

Essential Responsibilities

Influence many agile development teams through all phases of the agile development life cycle via SAFe.

Implement new technologies and assist developers as they migrate to new technologies.

Architect applications across the full stack; experience in PCF, Cloud‑Native Application Architecture, Microservices ecosystem, J2EE, Spring Java, and RESTful APIs is required.

Design data models to support complex business processes.

Drive a CI/CD strategy using Jenkins, Bitbucket, and uDeploy.

Collaborate with software developers, UX designers, product managers, application architects, and customer application experts to create outstanding apps.

Mentor and influence all levels of the team.

Ensure compliance with architecture, security, and technology standards set by Synchrony.

Assist in crafting and maintaining the future‑state technology architectural strategy, along with our application modernization and migration roadmap.

Participate in agile scrums consisting of cross‑functional teams.

Lead agile sprints as the technical expert, including sprint planning, daily stand‑ups, backlog grooming, and sprint reviews.

Ensure application code quality through development, testing, and QA.

Participate in root‑cause analyses, incident reports, and provide direction in problem resolution.

Analyze production defects, troubleshoot systems, identify root cause, and implement fixes.

Stay passionate about the latest technologies, open‑source projects, and languages.

Provide 24x7 on‑call support periodically throughout the year.

Identify ways to increase efficiency and improve system performance.

Work with third‑party vendors to develop software and/or integrate their software into the company's products.

Perform other duties and/or special projects as assigned.

Qualifications / Requirements

Bachelor’s degree and a minimum of 5 years of experience with software engineering, or High School Diploma/GED with 7 years of experience.

Minimum 5 years of application development experience.

Spring Boot and Spring Cloud development background.

Critical thinking, creativity, and problem‑solving skills.

Desired Characteristics

Experience building and consuming web services via SOAP and REST.

Expertise with continuous integration environments.

Experience writing unit, integration, and UI test cases.

Deep experience with responsive web design principles and cross‑device support.

Strong experience with Pivotal Cloud Foundry.

Knowledge of Splunk for production support.

Experience with database architecture, modeling, and familiarity with MySQL and SQL.

Familiarity with JSON, REST, and XML‑based web services.

Working knowledge of the overall mobile industry.

Excellent technical communication with technical and non‑technical peers.

Strong cross‑functional team player with the ability to work seamlessly across a matrix organization and partner with global development companies.

Desire to work in a dynamic, fast‑paced environment.

Experience developing and supporting financial/banking applications.

Excellent interpersonal skills with ability to influence clients, team members, management, and external groups.

Excellent attention to detail in a team environment.

Strong oral and written communication, analytical, and problem‑solving skills.

Ability to analyze, use structured problem‑solving and available tools to troubleshoot systems, identify root cause, action plans, impact, and resolution options.

Grade / Level Grade/Level: 11

Salary range:

$115,000 – $200,000

USD annually. Eligible for an annual bonus based on individual and company performance. Actual compensation offered within the posted salary range will be based upon work experience, skill level or knowledge.

Salaries are adjusted according to market in CA, NY Metro and Seattle.

Eligibility Requirements

Must be 18 years or older.

Must have a high school diploma or equivalent.

Must be willing to take a drug test, submit to a background investigation, and submit fingerprints as part of the onboarding process.

Must be able to satisfy the requirements of Section 19 of the Federal Deposit Insurance Act.

New hires (Level 4-7) must have 9 months of continuous service before they are eligible to post on other roles. After this requirement, a minimum 6 months’ time in position is required before posting for future non‑exempt roles. Employees, level 8 or greater, must have at least 18 months’ time in position before posting. All internal employees must consistently meet performance expectations and have approval from your manager to post (or the approval of your manager and HR if you don’t meet the time in position or performance expectations).
