Program Overview VSON serves one of the nation’s most athletic communities, caring for professional, local, and destination athletes—including the U.S. Ski Team—in a setting that combines clinic work, operating‑room exposure, durable medical equipment, physical therapy, sports outreach, and research through the Vail Summit Orthopaedics Research Foundation.
Mission Statement
Expose certified Athletic Trainers to a high quality team‑based sports medicine education and experience. This educational platform is hands‑on and real‑life, distinguishing it from traditional settings.
Provide defined educational competencies in clinical, surgical, physical therapy, radiology, outreach, and research requirements.
Goals
Expose certified Athletic Trainers with consistent high‑level clinical and surgical experience.
Provide a curriculum in radiology, physical therapy, and sports outreach.
Educate the Athletic Trainer on outcomes‑based orthopaedic research through the Vail Summit Orthopaedics Research Foundation.
Present orthopaedic sports medicine content at local, state, regional, or national levels.
Credentials to Apply
Master’s Degree (or equivalent)
1‑year certified experience preferred but not required
BOC certified
Current or eligible for state licensure
Current CPR certification
Valid NPI number
Valid driver’s license
Pass required background check and drug screen

Program Details
Stipend‑based educational program for certified Athletic Trainers.
Educated by world‑class orthopaedic physicians and staff.
Rotations with all VSON physicians and specialties (ankle, back, elbow, foot, hand, hip, joint replacement, knee, neck, neurosurgery, orthopedic trauma, physical medicine and rehabilitation, shoulder, spine, sports medicine, wrist).
Regularly scheduled academic sessions/labs, research objectives, and sports outreach assignments.
Unique experience with neurosurgery and trauma surgery.
Approved BOC Provider for Athletic Trainers; curriculum based on CAATE standards.
Program Dates Applications accepted December 14 2025 – March 1 2026. Residency: July 13 2026 – July 16 2027
