Overview
The Division of University Advancement (UA) at George Washington University’s Columbian College of Arts and Sciences (CCAS) seeks an Executive Director of Development. The role reports to the Assistant Vice President of Development and seeks a major‑gifts officer capable of leading fundraising efforts within a large urban research university while promoting a culture of philanthropy among alumni, students, faculty, staff, corporations, and foundations.
Responsibilities
Use data‑driven, metric‑based approaches to set annual and campaign fundraising goals and implement strategies that increase revenue for CCAS and UA priorities.
Develop and execute sustainable development programs that broaden and deepen CCAS’ and GW’s base of support while remaining donor‑centric.
Collaborate with a school‑based team and central colleagues (Principal Gifts, Planned Giving, Alumni Relations, Annual Giving, Donor Relations, Stewardship, Central Initiatives, Family Philanthropy, and Corporate & Foundation Relations) to maximize fundraising potential.
Strategically manage a prospect pool of approximately 75–80 CCAS’ top major and principal gift prospects, guiding donors through identification, cultivation, proposal, gift‑closing, and stewardship stages.
Maintain active participation in prospect tracking and management using the Advance database system.
Mentor a minimum of two CCAS frontline fundraisers, providing direction, professional development, and oversight of hiring and performance management when necessary.
Travel within the MDV region and to assigned U.S. geographic territories.
Perform other related work duties as assigned.
Minimum Qualifications
Bachelor’s degree in a related field and 8 years of relevant professional experience, or a Master’s degree or higher and 6 years of relevant experience.
Degree must be conferred by the start date of the position; qualifications may be substituted with an equivalent combination of education, training, and experience.
Progressive experience in institutional advancement or a similar complex organizational environment.
Demonstrated success cultivating and soliciting gifts at the six and seven figure level.
Exceptional communication and writing skills with strong attention to detail.
Experience in prospect management, developing and executing gift solicitation strategies of $100,000 or more, and prior supervisory responsibilities.
Willingness to collaborate across campus.
Availability for night and weekend work.
Frontline fundraising or manager training from Plus Delta Partners.
Preferred Qualifications
Bachelor’s, Master’s, or higher degree in Arts and Sciences.
Additional experience or certifications that enhance institutional advancement capabilities.
Hiring Range $138,128.76 - $200,263.21
