Role Overview The Head of Development will lead the engineering function end-to-end, combining hands-on technical contribution with people leadership, delivery ownership, and quality oversight. This role is responsible for translating business objectives into scalable technical solutions while ensuring execution excellence, platform security, and long-term maintainability. You will own the core product and guide the evolution of both development and quality assurance capabilities.
Key Responsibilities
Own the architecture, reliability, and ongoing evolution of the company’s core platform.
Remain hands-on in development, contributing production code while guiding technical direction.
Leverage AI-assisted development tools to accelerate delivery, improve testing coverage, and maintain high code quality.
Partner closely with an experienced architect to make strategic technical decisions that support scale, security, and performance.
Ensure best-in-class security practices are embedded throughout the development lifecycle.
Lead and mentor the existing engineering team while recruiting and hiring additional developers as the organization scales.
Build and expand a dedicated QA function to support robust testing and release confidence.
Provide coaching, performance management, and career development for engineers and QA team members.
Promote modern engineering practices, including the thoughtful adoption of AI-enabled workflows.
Product Delivery & Collaboration
Operate with a startup mindset, stepping in wherever needed to ensure successful outcomes.
Partner closely with product leadership to align technical execution with business priorities, roadmaps, and timelines.
Collaborate cross-functionally with design, operations, and executive leadership to deliver high-impact features.
Own release planning and deployment processes to ensure timely, reliable delivery of new functionality.
Process, Quality & Documentation
Establish scalable development and QA processes that balance speed with quality.
Implement automated and AI-driven testing strategies to improve coverage and efficiency.
Maintain clear documentation for architecture, security, and engineering workflows using modern tooling.
Identify bottlenecks and technical risks, and proactively implement solutions to improve team velocity and system resilience.
Qualifications
Bachelor’s degree in Computer Science, Engineering, or a related discipline.
Demonstrated experience using AI tools for code generation, testing automation, documentation, and development acceleration.
3+ years of experience leading engineering teams, including hiring, performance management, and team development.
Experience partnering with architects and senior engineers to guide technical strategy.
Proven ability to establish or scale QA functions, either internally or through external partners.
Strong understanding of security best practices, particularly within financial or regulated environments.
Experience with payment systems or money movement APIs is a strong plus.
Track record of success in startup or high-growth environments.
Strong problem-solving, communication, and leadership skills.
Based in Austin, TX, or willing to relocate.
