Job Description Summary
The Medical Science Liaison (MSL) will serve as a scientific expert on BD’s plastic and reconstructive surgery product portfolio, including surgical scaffolds and soft tissue reinforcement systems. The role is responsible for advancing compliant scientific engagement while aligning stakeholder insights with the organization’s strategy.
Job Responsibilities
Align on medical strategy and key objectives with cross‑functional partners, including medical, clinical, commercial, regulatory, R&D, and market access teams.
Identify, segment, and map all relevant stakeholders: KOLs, plastic and reconstructive surgeons, HCPs, payers, patient groups, and internal influencers.
Gather and analyze comprehensive data on stakeholder backgrounds, interests, and networks to prioritize impactful engagement.
Develop personalized engagement plans reflecting stakeholder needs and organizational goals in plastic and reconstructive surgery.
Design and execute coordinated objectives for each audience segment, with clearly defined scientific and educational outcomes.
Deploy a blend of proactive (planned educational sessions, advisory boards, congress symposia) and reactive (data inquiry response, ad hoc consultation) engagement tactics.
Use diverse engagement channels: in‑person or virtual KOL meetings, collaborative research, educational events, surgical congresses, and digital platforms.
Collect, document, and communicate insights from stakeholder interactions to internal teams, continually refining the overall medical strategy and supporting leadership in plastic and reconstructive surgery therapeutics.
Maintain strict compliance and ethical standards, ensuring clear separation between scientific engagement and promotional activity.
Track engagement activities against established benchmarks; assess and adapt engagement impact and tactics to maximize value.
Foster and sustain long‑term, mutually beneficial relationships with stakeholders by serving as a scientific expert and advancing clinical knowledge.
Minimum Requirements
Bachelor’s degree
3–5 years of either: field‑based MSL experience or work experience in the medical device industry (with some surgery‑specific medical device experience)
Strong expertise in medical affairs, KOL engagement, and the clinical/regulatory landscape specific to surgical innovation
Demonstrated record of effective cross‑functional collaboration
Ability to analyze stakeholder networks and tailor communications to varying audiences
Outstanding presentation, relationship‑building, and organizational skills
Ability to interpret complicated clinical and pre‑clinical data
Excellent communication and presentation skills
Knowledge of the US Healthcare System and relevant regulations
Strong analytical and problem‑solving skills
Knowledge of clinical trial design and process
Understanding of US healthcare system, medical practice, and clinical decision making
Ability to develop trust and integrity with peers and others within BD
Travel: 60–80% travel, including overnight and weekend stays.
Preferred Qualifications
Master’s degree (MPH, MBA, MSN)
Advanced degree (PhD, MD, PharmD, or equivalent) in a relevant scientific or clinical discipline is considered a plus.
Workplace Most roles require a minimum of 4 days of in‑office presence per week. Remote or field‑based positions will have different workplace arrangements indicated in the posting.
