Junior Substation P&C Design Engineer

Position Overview This role supports technical staff, engineers, and project managers in due diligence, investigation, remediation, impact assessment, permitting, design, development, and construction of utility, industrial, and commercial scale projects. Tasks include research, design, and construction of transmission and distribution substations, power distribution, renewable energy, and protection and control systems.

Responsibilities

Assist with collecting, compiling, and analyzing data related to substation components and equipment specifications for procurement package development and pricing.

Support the detailed design of medium to high‑voltage substations, including single‑line, three‑line, schematic and wiring diagrams, SCADA and communication, station physical layouts, cable and conduit plans, ground grid, foundation, lightning protection, and bills of materials.

Provide technical assistance for equipment sizing and cabling, AC/DC panel design, conduit and trenching design, and substation studies and calculations (lighting, lightning protection, voltage drop).

Prepare technical reports and documentation using sketches, calculations, spreadsheets, and relevant software.

Assist senior engineers with research, recommendations for components, field equipment applications, and operations.

Verify site characteristics and provide engineering, design, testing, maintenance and construction support.

Develop electrical calculations for loads, equipment sizing, feeder sizing, voltage drop, grounding, lighting circuits, facility services, and power distribution.

Support risk identification and assessment, offering input for design concepts, construction, mitigation, and remediation projects.

Collaborate with cross‑functional teams including project controls, business deployment, procurement, document control and permitting.

Help prepare work plans and coordinate field/site work and permitting.

Maintain adherence to WSP’s Code of Conduct and related policies.

Perform additional responsibilities as required by business needs.

Required Qualifications

Bachelor’s Degree in Electrical Engineering (or equivalent experience).

1 to 3 years of relevant post‑education experience in an electrical engineering capacity.

Experience in operations and project controls for reporting.

Knowledge of electrical engineering principles, practices, processes, design/build, and application to permitting and project work‑related issues.

Familiarity with electrical construction laws, codes, regulations, compliance practices and record‑keeping requirements.

Analytical mindset with sound judgment in evaluating situations and making decisions.

Strong interpersonal and communication skills for interacting with engineering and non‑engineering audiences.

Self‑leadership with attention to detail, accuracy, multi‑tasking and prioritization in a dynamic work environment.

Ability to work independently with minimal supervision as well as part of a team.

Basic proficiency with technical writing, office automation, software, math principles, predictive models, spreadsheets, and tools.

Experience with discipline‑specific design software (CADD, Aspen, CAPE, ETAP, Bluebeam, AutoCAD electrical).

Proven track record of upholding workplace safety and ability to abide by WSP’s health, safety and drug/alcohol and harassment policies.

Availability for schedules that may extend beyond the typical workweek.

Occasional travel may be required depending on project requirements.

Preferred Qualifications

Engineer in Training certification.

Prior design experience.

Experience designing 15 kV through 230 kV substations and using IEEE/ANSI standards.

Experience managing multiple concurrent substation projects.

Compensation Expected Salary: $85,000 – $105,000
