Northrop Grumman Defense Systems has an exceptional opportunity for an experienced Electrical Engineer to support our Armament Systems business site in Plymouth, MN. We are a leading producer of medium and large‑caliber tactical and training ammunition for U.S. and allied militaries. Northrop Grumman is at the forefront of developing new, advanced ammunition types that include armor penetration, airbursting, proximity‑fuzed and guided munitions to enhance lethality and overmatch on the battlefield.
Responsibilities
Provide technical leadership on complex development programs, integrating military weapons into commercial and military vehicles.
Work with an Integrated Product Team across engineering disciplines to ensure team drives toward optimal interdisciplinary solution.
Present program technical status to internal management and customers.
Design system solutions integrating weapon systems and subsystems into vehicles.
Conduct analysis and provide recommendations to ensure vehicle electrical power system is adequate and safe for vehicle under all electrical load scenarios.
Generate wiring and electrical schematic designs using CAD tools.
Generate test plans and conduct tests on weapon systems at the bench level and integrated into vehicles.
Compile and analyze test data to determine effectiveness of weapon system design.
Develop specifications for and perform selection of subsystems and components for use in vehicle systems.
Strong analytical skills and the ability to organize/prioritize job assignments and tasks.
Possess strong interpersonal skills to work effectively within a development team to understand system level interdependencies that impact design requirements and constraints.
Is comfortable working in a support role to other design engineers and is an active learner of new design techniques and technologies.
Qualifications
Bachelor of Science in Electrical Engineering or closely related STEM discipline plus 8 years of experience as Electrical Engineer, or a Master of Science degree plus 6 years of experience as Electrical Engineer.
Experience in technical leadership of a complex program requiring coordination of engineering work.
Excellent problem‑solving skills involving complex vehicle systems and subsystems.
Excellent hands‑on experimentation, test and debug skills at the bench level in the lab, and at the vehicle level in the field.
Power electronics and circuit analysis skills, with knowledge of batteries, power conversion, power distribution, and electromagnetic compatibility.
Understanding of MIL‑STD‑1275 (28‑Volt DC Electrical Systems in Military Vehicles) and MIL‑STD‑461 (EMI Requirements for Subsystems); equivalent automotive or agricultural equipment standards acceptable.
Proficiency of automotive communications buses (CAN, Ethernet).
Ability to specify/select off‑the‑shelf subsystems and components that meet vehicle specifications for performance, shock and vibration.
Ability to generate cable/wiring/harness diagrams using CAD tools.
Excellent understanding of product development processes.
Ability to communicate clearly and effectively to cross‑functional team members.
Ability to work independently as well as in a team environment.
Ability to work effectively in a fast‑paced, rapidly changing, short‑turn‑around environment.
Position may require moderate travel to meet with various customers, in both government and industry, and to interface with suppliers.
Able to obtain a DoD Secret Clearance.
Primary Level Salary Range: $135,800.00 – $203,600.00
Employees may be eligible for overtime, shift differential, discretionary bonus, and for VP/Director levels long‑term incentives. Benefits include health insurance, life and disability insurance, savings plan, company‑paid holidays, and paid time off for vacation or personal business.
