Job Description : The Operating Engineer, under the direction of the Assistant Chief and Lead Operating Engineers, works interdependently to resolve facility issues and customer concerns. Provides support in the operation, maintenance, and repair activities associated with the University’s utility systems. Supports after‑hours and weekend requests and mentors new staff members as appropriate.

Essential Functions

Operate, maintain, and troubleshoot campus thermal systems (steam, chilled water, heating water), plant equipment, water treatment systems, and domestic water & sewer distribution systems. Train Assistant Operating Engineers and FMT.

Maintain records of inspection, operation, maintenance, and repair of campus utilities and plant equipment, and use historical data to optimize scheduling and repair of critical components.

Perform inspections and tests to ensure boiler and chiller water chemistry is within acceptable limits and maintain proper chemical water treatment.

Support resolution of after‑hours and weekend requests received through the customer response center line (2Fix).

Complete approved training and performance requirements, maintain an IDP, and document all items in the LMS.

Position Type / Expected Hours of Work

Full‑time, 40 hours/week.

Non‑Exempt.

Evening and weekend work is required. Required to work multiple shifts: 7AM–3PM, 3PM–11PM, 11PM–7AM. Relief position, 24/7 coverage and may work unscheduled shifts as needed.

Perform job duties in confined spaces, exposed to extreme temperatures and physically demanding: frequent or constant lifting, pushing, or pulling of heavy objects.

Salary Range

$36 – $41 per hour

Required Education and Experience

High school diploma or equivalent.

3rd Class DC Steam Engineer’s license (non‑restricted) by the date of hire.

Valid United States driver’s license at the time of hire and ability to obtain and maintain University driving privileges.

1–3 years of relevant experience working in high‑pressure steam boilers, low‑pressure steam boilers, heating boilers, refrigeration equipment, hot water boilers, or a combination of these without limiting total capacity.

Preferred Education and Experience

Facilities Management Certificate

LEED Green Associate Certification

Additional Eligibility Qualifications

Strong working knowledge of utility systems and ability to perform moderately complex technical tasks.

Math & Science knowledge of percentages, decimals, fractions, length, area, volume, and thermodynamics basics.

Basic knowledge of Building Automation Systems (BAS).

Decision‑Making & Leadership: ability to resolve moderately complex technical problems and serve as escalation point.

Communication & Interpersonal: clear oral and written communication, constructive feedback, and commitment to dignity and respect.

Technology: use of Microsoft Outlook, Word, and PowerPoint.

Physical Requirements: lift and carry 50 lbs, climb ladders, work in confined spaces, work at heights, and work in temperature extremes.

Minimum age 18, interest in ongoing professional development.
