Washingtonian Magazine is seeking a creative, hardworking journalist with experience in writing and editing articles and packages, and a particular interest in real estate, home design, and neighborhoods. This person should have a passion for producing articles that are interesting, lively, and informative—and often are the kinds of pieces that readers save and refer back to. They should be curious, open to new ideas, and willing to dig deep with unbiased, fair, knowledgeable, well‑reported, and insightful advice. The ideal candidate would have an understanding of Washington and how it works, and would also have experience putting together survey‑based lists such as top realtors and top mortgage professionals.
What the job entails:
Conceive, plan, assign/write/edit assorted articles and packages for both print and online on subjects including real estate news and trends, home renovation guides, interior design trends, home tours, luxury home sales, and neighborhood guides.
Produce annual research‑oriented or survey‑based "top" lists such as top realtors and top mortgage professionals.
Work with staff/freelance writers of varying experience through all phases of a story, from idea generation to reporting to writing and revising.
Collaborate with art and digital teams.
Watch for breaking real estate and home sale news, and produce quick online posts when needed.
Collaborate with the magazine's other editors to suggest and brainstorm stories—whether for online or print—and pitch in on large cover packages when needed.
Other one‑off responsibilities as designated by the editor‑in‑chief.
What you'd bring:
Minimum of 3‑5 years experience writing and editing.
Experience writing or editing articles with a consumer‑oriented bent.
An eye for good design and a knack for spotting trends.
The ability to multi‑task and juggle big projects, along with a respect for deadlines.
Ideally, actual experience producing "best professionals" lists such as top realtors, and in conducting surveys.
An understanding and appreciation of city and regional magazines.
Office location: Washington, DC
Salary range: $68,000 to $73,000
