About The Role Riot Platforms is seeking a Director, Security to provide proactive leadership, expertise, and oversight for a comprehensive, best‑practices security program across the enterprise—including data centers, critical infrastructure, and high‑value sites.

Essential Functions

Oversee global organizational security, Company Global Security Operations Center (GSOC), including developing and enforcing physical security standards for all Riot data centers, hosting environments, and critical technology facilities.

Continuously evaluate and adjust controls for emerging threats to data center and bitcoin mining environments (e.g., unauthorized access, sabotage, insider risk, and physical impacts to power/cooling systems).

Oversee travel and event security plans.

Review and regularly audit organizational policies and procedures.

Collaborate with the VP of Human Resources on hiring, firing, and business partnership risk assessments.

Establish and oversee the execution of goals, plans, objectives, policies, and procedures related to employee personal safety and security, violence prevention, security incident investigations, emergency response, and coordination with law enforcement agencies.

Oversee the development of a comprehensive Workplace Violence Prevention program (awareness, reporting, training, and response).

Serve as a key advisor to Executives on physical risk to Riot’s facilities and potential business/operational impacts.

Develop and monitor security operations budget; ensure compliance with procurement policies and procedures. Forecast and justify capital and operational security expenditures specific to data center environments, including physical hardening, monitoring, and redundancy.

Lead or support investigations involving facility access abuses, equipment tampering, and incidents impacting critical infrastructure.

Participate in identifying capital expenditure projects for security, recommending and prioritizing investments that strengthen data center resilience (access control, monitoring, incident response).

Assure compliance with all applicable codes and standards.

Develop, manage, and maintain statistical and annual reports, including tracking and reporting data center‑specific physical security metrics (access violations, incident response times, audit findings, remediation status).

Oversee the management of incident tracking systems for security‑related events (trespassing, assault, theft, graffiti, vandalism) and coordinate information sharing with law enforcement.

Knowledge, Skills, And Abilities

Excellent working knowledge of physical security principles and facilities technology systems, with high‑level skills in access control and video monitoring technology.

Experience in complex, multi‑site organizations, preferably with data centers or other mission‑critical facilities.

Demonstrated ability to evaluate and mitigate emerging threats to data center and bitcoin mining environments, and proficiency in designing and maintaining layered security controls (e.g., perimeter protection, biometrics, CCTV, intrusion detection).

Strong analytical skills for developing, analyzing, and implementing recommendations to enhance physical and operational security.

Expertise in developing and implementing comprehensive Workplace Violence Prevention programs and ability to promote effective training on security protocols, access procedures, and emergency response in technical facilities.

Education And Experience

Bachelor’s degree preferred; equivalent education/experience considered.

15+ years of combined investigative law enforcement, government, security management, and threat assessment experience.

Experience overseeing security for data centers or other critical infrastructure facilities strongly preferred.

Multidisciplinary experience: quantifiable experience working in or around another industry—education, hospitality, law, business, etc.

5+ years previous board or organizational experience, professional or volunteer.

Preferred Education And Experience

CTM (ATAP).

ASIS or other security certification. Additional certifications related to data center or critical infrastructure security are a plus.

Compensation And Benefits

Competitive Salary: Base salary range $150,000 – $180,000 (commensurate with experience) + bonus + sign‑on equity grant.
