Hiring Range: Substation Service Engineer $78,000 – $99,600; Senior Substation Service Engineer $97,900 – $125,000

Essential Functions

Provides engineering support in installation, operation, maintenance, troubleshooting, training, project management, reliability, root cause analysis, and purchasing of substation equipment.

Supports construction and maintenance of transmission and distribution systems; available for emergency calls at all times.

Investigates equipment problems with field personnel and manufacturers; ensures proper resolution with engineering and vendors; participates in Root Cause Analysis.

Integrates new equipment, ensuring electrical acceptance testing, training, spare parts, test equipment, safety, and maintenance procedures.

Prepares and submits studies and engineering requests to resolve problems identified through maintenance and test reports.

Establishes preventive maintenance documentation and updates procedures for new or upgraded equipment, emphasizing personnel safety.

Develops tool and test equipment requirements with supervisors, including capital budget requests and cost justification; investigates current developments and recommends new methods.

Implements environmental assignments such as PCB and SF6 tracking and procedures, special test equipment procedures, and special project implementation.

Assists superintendent with administrative duties (budgets, meetings, reports, training development); serves as instructor when qualified; substitutes superintendent during vacation or absence.

Participates in company emergency response activities as assigned.

Basic Qualifications – Knowledge

Thorough working knowledge of electrical/electronic engineering fundamentals applied to the electric utility industry (normally acquired through accredited college courses or equivalent experience). A BSEE will nominally fulfill the requirement.

Professional Engineer license strongly desirable.

Working knowledge of personal computers and/or mainframe systems for spreadsheet and word processing software applications.

Understanding of the principles of operation and maintenance of substation equipment in a utility environment or equivalent experience.

Knowledge of LEAN continuous improvement principles and best practices.

Knowledge of SafeStart principles and best practices.

Basic Qualifications – Skills

Excellent oral, written, and listening skills.

Strong interpersonal skills to influence various groups or individuals.

Ability to remain flexible in a demanding work environment and adapt to rapidly changing priorities.

Ability to read, interpret, and explain complex instructions regarding equipment operation, testing, and maintenance.

Analytical, computational, organizational, and conceptual skills for handling multiple projects and programs.

Must have or be able to qualify for a State of Hawaii driver’s license and meet the standards for driving positions as stated in company hiring policy.

Basic Qualifications – Experience

5–7 years of experience in operation and maintenance of electrical/electronic systems in a utility environment.

Bachelor of Science from an accredited engineering school in Electrical Engineering or equivalent education.

State of Hawaii Professional Engineer License in a relevant discipline highly desired for stamping drawings and designs.

Senior Substation Service Engineer – Additional Responsibilities

Supervises and directs all Substation Service Engineer and Substation Predictive Maintenance activities related to inspections, equipment testing, troubleshooting, data collection, and analysis.

Manages, directs, and develops activities for Substation Service Engineers I & II, Field Technologists, and Substation Predictive Maintenance Specialists.

Sees all responsibilities of a Substation Service Engineer II.

Serves on committees and represents the division in leadership roles, collaborating with other departments on system changes, IMT, Risk Management, ERP enhancements, Smart Grid, Asset Management, Reliability/Resilience, and Renewable Energy initiatives.

Leads and consults with manufacturers, engineering, operations, project management, and contractors to ensure proper equipment design, planning, scheduling, troubleshooting, operational performance, and emergency response.

Assists superintendent with budgeting, meetings, reports, training development, and substitutes superintendent during absences.

Participates in company emergency response activities as assigned.

Senior Substation Service Engineer – Basic Qualifications – Knowledge

Same knowledge base as the Substation Service Engineer, plus working knowledge of Predictive Maintenance tools and techniques (Partial Discharge, Infrared Thermography, Oil Analysis, Vibration Analysis, Ultrasonic Monitoring).

Professional Engineer license strongly desirable.

Knowledge of LEAN continuous improvement and Safety principles.

Computer proficiency (spreadsheets, word processing).

Senior Substation Service Engineer – Basic Qualifications – Skills

Same skill set as the Substation Service Engineer.

Senior Substation Service Engineer – Basic Qualifications – Experience

7–10 years of experience in operation and maintenance of electrical/electronic systems in a utility environment.

Bachelor of Science from an accredited engineering school in Electrical Engineering or equivalent.

State of Hawaii Professional Engineer License highly desired.
