Job Description The Assurance Experienced Manager is responsible for supervising, directing, and reviewing the results throughout the planning, field work, and “wrap‑up” stages of an audit client engagement. In this role, the Manager is charged with marketing, networking, and business development within an area of expertise, and ensures engagement profitability involving billings and collections. The Manager advises clients on economic and regulatory risks, resolves complex accounting issues, applies GAAP and GAAS consistently, writes technical consultation memos, and documents, validates, tests, and assesses financial reporting control systems.
Responsibilities
Control Environment
Applies knowledge and understanding of the overall control environment and organization, including supervisory controls.
Validates and assesses effectiveness of internal control over financial reporting.
Identifies and communicates to management and audit committee suggestions to improve internal controls and accounting procedures.
Identifies and delegates audit functions to team members as appropriate.
Supervises audit team work, reviews workpapers and conclusions onsite during audit field work.
Provides on‑job training to engagement staff during audit field work.
GAAP
Applies knowledge of governing principles to client transactions, documenting and communicating their application.
Identifies and consults with clients on the impact of new accounting pronouncements.
Monitors and communicates important professional and industry pronouncements.
Presents and discusses alternative generally accepted accounting principles and arguments for/against alternatives.
Drafts complex financial statements and related footnote disclosures, communicating them effectively to clients.
Identifies complex accounting issues and documents resolution, seeking counsel of BDO technical experts as needed.
SEC & PCAOB
Applies knowledge of SEC regulations and PCAOB guidelines, and documents and communicates their application.
Reviews SEC filings (MD&A, financial statements, disclosures) for form, content, completeness, and accuracy.
Reviews required communications to clients and Audit Committees, ensuring completeness, accuracy, and compliance with firm and professional guidelines.
Reviews Section 404 internal control audit work, ensuring necessary checklists are complete and compliant.
Ensures compliance with engagement independence requirements and consults internally as needed.
GAAS
Applies knowledge of professional standards and GAAS/PCAOB in performing and supervising work.
Provides guidance to others and affirms conclusions made by others.
Communicates matters required to be reported to Audit Committees/Boards.
Applies efficiency tools such as statistical sampling, CAATS, etc.
Methodology
Applies BDO standards for effective and efficient delivery of quality services.
Conducts detailed review to assure audit is completed per assurance manual standards.
Prepares or reviews required communications to management and audit committees.
Recommends appropriate outcomes to critical issues.
Initiates and prepares client acceptance/retention procedures.
Plans the audit process and oversees execution with quality, efficiency, and completeness.
Executes proper BDO methodology including archiving procedures.
Considers Sarbanes-Oxley rules for 404 and financial statement audits of public clients.
Research
Seeks or maintains information from authoritative sources to draw conclusions on target issues.
Defines methodology for research projects and completes them timely.
Applies comprehensive knowledge of appropriate research tools.
Prepares memo supporting research/conclusions and consults with others if appropriate.
Presents issues to RTD or concurring reviewer accurately.
Other Duties as Required
Supervisory Responsibilities
Responsible for supervision of Associates and Senior Associates on all projects.
Reviews work prepared by Associates and Senior Associates and provides review comments.
Acts as a career advisor to Associates and Senior Associates.
Schedules and manages workload of Associates and Senior Associates.
Provides verbal and written performance feedback to Associates and Senior Associates.
Teaches/coaches seniors and associates to provide on‑the‑job learning.
Qualifications Education
Bachelor’s degree required; major in Accounting, Finance, Economics, or Statistics preferred.
Master’s in Accountancy preferred.
Experience
Six (6) or more years of prior relevant audit experience and/or public accounting, private industry accounting, or consulting/professional services experience required.
Prior significant supervisory experience required.
Industry expertise in one or more assurance specialties preferred.
License / Certifications
Active licensed US CPA, recognized active International Equivalent or unique qualification as defined by BDO’s Assurance Licensing Policy required.
If active international equivalent or unique qualification, required to obtain an active US CPA license within approved timeframe as defined by firm licensing requirements.
Software
Proficient with Microsoft Office Suite preferred.
Experience with assurance applications and research tools preferred.
