Associate General Counsel

Job Summary We are seeking an Associate General Counsel to join our Office of General Counsel and support the University's mission with integrity, expertise, and a collaborative spirit. The Associate General Counsel will advise on complex transactional legal matters and projects, often working independently or as lead attorney, and will recognize when to elevate matters to senior attorneys.
Job Duties
Provide legal advice and guidance, including review and drafting of agreements for university transactions (academic collaborations, donor agreements, public‑private collaborations, research and intellectual property matters, information technology matters, and procurements). Guidance will be based on applicable law and involve strong analytical, communication, and negotiation skills.
Provide deal‑formation legal support—deal ideation, structure, negotiation, and related document production—to departments such as Procurement, External Affairs, Development, Research, IT, and Athletics.
Perform other legal duties as assigned by the General Counsel.
Knowledge, Skill, and Abilities
Thorough knowledge of laws and regulations affecting a state higher‑education institution with agricultural regulation obligations.
Ability to interpret and apply policies, laws, and judicial decisions; think critically and communicate conclusions clearly.
Ability to manage a robust workload, establish priorities, meet deadlines, and uphold ethics and compliance.
Work independently and collaboratively with internal and external counsel, recognizing when to involve senior attorneys or the General Counsel.
High‑integrity ethical standards and commitment to compliance with applicable laws, regulations, and policies.
Minimum Requirements
Juris Doctor (JD) from an accredited law school.
Ten or more years of experience as an attorney.
Preference for candidates with transactional experience on deals involving public higher‑education institutions.
Member of the South Carolina Bar (or eligibility for limited certificate).
Subject to approval of the South Carolina Attorney General.
Additional Responsibilities
Acts as lead by guiding the work of others who perform essentially the same work.
No budget responsibilities.
Physical Requirements
90% sit (stationary position) for prolonged periods.
100% communicate, converse, give direction, express oneself.
Work Schedule Standard hours: 37.5 per week.
Compensation Salary commensurate with experience, based on Clemson's compensation guidelines.
