Philadelphia and Scientific Advancement Program

portfolio, which houses all of Pew’s grantmaking initiatives, including national and international science research programs and a state‑level science policy fellowship program. The portfolio also supports thriving communities in Philadelphia through grants to health and human services nonprofits, arts organizations, and public space projects, and conducts research on local issues such as housing, jobs, the economy, poverty, and demographics. An additional component, the Evidence Project, fosters collective action among philanthropies, public funding agencies, and diverse leaders in government, academia, and civil society to translate research into outcomes.

State Science Policy Fellowship Initiative

supports the development of science policy fellowships in state legislatures. Fellows engage with legislators and staff to translate complex scientific information, draft policy documents, analyze data, and provide strategic insights. The initiative will provide grants to launch or expand fellowship programs in up to 20 states or territories.

Position Overview As an Associate I, you will support the initiative in establishing and strengthening science policy fellowship programs in state legislatures. You will work closely with the project director, officer, and partners to secure long‑term support and ensure fellowship programs effectively promote career growth and substantive contributions to policymaking. Reporting to the Project Director, you will manage applications and selection of grantees, grant administration, convening meeting planning, and outcome tracking. You will coordinate with external partners and internal departments (IT, Finance, Conference and Event Services) as relevant. This Washington, DC‑based position follows a hybrid work model with core office days and flexibility to telework the remaining days and four telework “flex weeks” per year.

Responsibilities

Maintain accurate program records using relevant software and systems; support data infrastructure improvements.

Assist in planning and implementing internal convenings, including advisory committee meetings and virtual gatherings, by managing logistics and preparing materials.

Support the management of grantmaking processes, including tracking applications, agreements, and reporting requirements.

Help monitor and organize engagement activities with grantees and other partners.

Contribute to internal summaries and presentations that synthesize program activities and outcomes.

Participate in activities that support program and Pew‑wide objectives.

Requirements

Bachelor’s degree or equivalent experience.

Generally, one year of applicable work experience.

Strong organizational and time‑management skills, with the capacity to coordinate multiple tasks and deadlines.

Enthusiasm for detail when tracking information and maintaining records.

Willingness to engage in operational and process‑oriented work.

Comfort using technical systems and proficiency with Microsoft Office suite products.

Strong written and oral communication skills.

Ability to work collaboratively and consult with senior peers when needed.

Key Attributes and Preferred Experience

Skilled at developing and managing productive and collaborative relationships.

Interest in science policy and legislative processes.

Highly flexible, comfortable juggling multiple priorities, and attentive to details.

Familiarity with grants management systems or CRM tools such as Salesforce.

Travel Occasional domestic travel to meetings and conferences may be required.

Work Authorization Candidates must be legally authorized to work in the country for which they are seeking employment without visa sponsorship.

Salary Range $63,800 USD — $71,300 USD
