Job Status: Exempt, Full-time (1.0 FTE)
Overview The Athenian School, an independent, college‑preparatory boarding and day school, serves grades 6‑12 across the East Bay.
As an experiential, collaborative, and interdisciplinary learning community, we value critical thinking, respectful discourse, and mutual support.
The Assistant Director of Learning Services plays a central, student‑centered role in managing the daily operations of our Learning Services program and ensuring that all students receive the personalized support they need to thrive.
Primary Responsibilities
Maintain the general student caseload and coordinate individualized learning plans (Personal Learning Plans, or PLPs).
Lead the creation and ongoing management of PLPs for students across grades 6‑12.
Coordinate and oversee standardized‑testing accommodations within the school’s academic framework.
Provide targeted one‑on‑one and small‑group academic support to strengthen students’ learning skills and executive functioning.
Partner effectively with teachers, counselors, and administrators to promote student well‑being and academic excellence.
Support neuro‑diverse learners using evidence‑based practices and Universal Design for Learning (UDL) strategies.
Core Requirements
Passionate about supporting adolescents with diverse learning profiles.
Strong cultural competency, empathy, and professionalism when working with students, families, and colleagues.
3–5 years of direct work as a Learning Specialist or academic coach in a grades 6‑12 setting.
Master’s degree in Special Education or a related field (or equivalent experience) is preferred.
Excellent organizational, written, and verbal communication skills.
Comfortable using educational technology and learning‑management systems.
Knowledge of high‑school and college accommodation requirements and a commitment to equity and inclusion.
Experience with UDL and a dedication to student well‑being.
Additional opportunity: faculty can coach a sport for a supplemental stipend.
