Division Director of Pediatric Hematology-Oncology and Associate Director at the Upstate Cancer Center

in Syracuse, NY.

The selected leader will be charged with:

Expanding and strengthening the comprehensive care programs in benign hematology (hemoglobinopathy, hemophilia, thrombosis), leukemia/lymphoma, solid tumors, CNS tumors, cancer predisposition and survivorship/AYA oncology.

Building a signature research niche that aligns with the institutional strengths, including but not limited to Upstate NY consortium, rural/health disparities, cancer survivorship and vascular anomalies.

Positioning the division as a regional referral hub for complex pediatric hematology/oncology and strengthening integration between Golisano CH and adult hematology/oncology to ensure seamless transitions of care.

Enhancing the resident and medical student experiences with a structured, innovative curriculum so that more of our learners/trainees consider pursuing this field.

Increasing philanthropy and donor engagement to support endowments, research funds, and family assistance.

Opportunity Highlights

The selected leader will hold an Endowed Chair in Pediatric Cancer.

The Cancer Center Chief, Dr. Thomas Vandermeer, is very supportive of pediatric programs and research and hopes to achieve a collaborative relationship with the named Associate Chief of the Cancer Center.

The division is active in clinical research with the Children’s Oncology Group. There is a senior faculty member who serves as the Principal Investigator for the division’s COG affiliate, providing an excellent opportunity to mentor young faculty.

The pediatric cancer program has amazing resources in pediatric neuro‑oncology with 2 pediatric neuro‑oncologists, pediatric neuroradiology, and a pediatric neuropathologist (who is also the reviewer for the Children’s Oncology Group).

The division enjoys strong collaboration with regional partners in Buffalo, Albany and Rochester and is active in the Pediatric Hematology/Oncology Thruway Collaboration. Established in 2017, this group meets annually and has collaborated on several projects leading to multiple publications while also discussing strategies to better serve kids and families in Upstate New York.

The division is supported by a clinical research office, which employs two clinical research associates. The office oversees all of the Children’s Oncology Group activities as well as 2 other consortiums for which the division participates in oncology.
