Job Summary
Senior Mechanical Engineer - Thermal will work in our global New Product Development (NPD) team that is responsible for modular integrated data center row and rack-based solutions. They will be responsible for evaluating and ensuring HVAC integrity, interoperability, and compatibility of integrated IT infrastructure systems, including racks, power distribution units, and thermal management components in new product development programs and customer projects. Their responsibilities include knowledge of fluid and thermodynamics, 3D modeling and evaluation, validation of Form, Fit, and Function of system integration, creating thermal system schematics, selecting thermal equipment and components, completing system calculations, ensuring compliance with national and local energy requirements, BOM creation, and parts and system documentation. They will work closely with cross‑functional team members and provide production support during factory integration. They will help assess and find solutions that positively impact production and quality, and participate in and lead design reviews with customers, engineering team members and other internal work teams.

Responsibilities
Select thermal equipment and components that satisfy NPD and project requirements
Analyze and document requirements for HVAC architecture of rack and row-based products, aisle containment, and wall‑mount products, with a primary focus on designing and evaluating thermal compatibility and integration of system components
Interpret thermodynamics calculations, CFD analysis and energy code compliance reports
Develop comprehensive thermal systems schematics designs
Prepare and maintain technical documentation related to mechanical integration, compatibility studies, and design reviews
Participate in, communicate, and support updates and changes to the “standards playbook” for all relevant stakeholders, ensuring clarity, alignment, and timely awareness across engineering, product management, and business unit teams
Help clarify and adapt existing Vertiv guidelines for system‑relevant application and easy implementation in new product developments, and provide feedback from practical design and integration work to drive continuous improvement
Participate in cross‑functional design reviews and work with engineering and product management teams across business units to ensure new product development aligns with requirements, while providing recommendations for improving system interoperability, serviceability, and manufacturability
Stay current with emerging technologies and best practices in mechanical design
Provide engineering support to manufacturing during production and testing
Support pre‑sales team in solution development, quotations, solution presentations to customers
Manage multiple ongoing projects and switch tasks when situations arise
Work directly with Procurement and material vendors on component sourcing and selection.
Mentor and advise design work of other team members
Requirements
BSME or equivalent; master’s degree or Professional Engineer (PE) license is a plus
Minimum 7 years of experience in HVAC design for new product development, preferably within IT infrastructure or related industries
Familiarity with industry mechanical safety standards and regulatory requirements, including ASME, ASHRAE, ANSI, OSHA, ISO, ISTA, IEC 60364, and building and energy codes
Proficiency in 3D CAD modeling, specifically with Creo; experience with Re and AutoCAD a plus
Ability to interpret and create HVAC construction drawings and specifications
Preferred understanding and ability to navigate the current energy code
Ability to research new designs, technologies and thermal‑mechanical construction methods for data center equipment and facilities
Demonstrates excellent problem solving and communication skills (written and verbal)
Work independently and is highly motivated to initiate and accept new challenges
Exhibit effective planning and information management skills
Possess positive team‑oriented attitude and desire to innovate
