Tax Managing Director, Alternative Investments
BDO USA is seeking a seasoned tax leader to drive compliance and consulting services for a portfolio of Venture Capital, Private Equity, Hedge Fund, and Real Estate clients. The role combines client relationship management, engagement leadership, and technical tax execution.
Responsibilities
Ensure client compliance with all applicable authorities while minimizing tax and reporting burdens, and maintain compliance with BDO Tax Quality Manual (“TQM”).
Prepare required tax filings using a system of review and documentation to guarantee full compliance and low client burden.
Collect all data needed to satisfy filing requirements, identify missing items, and communicate promptly to prepare returns.
Leverage firm compliance software to maximize efficiency in the tax preparation process.
Collaborate with senior leaders, managers, tax seniors, and associates to complete projects, including follow‑up on open items.
Deliver high‑quality federal, state, and international tax compliance services.
Lead complex engagements with a team of tax professionals, managing billing, collections, and project budgets.
Build and manage client relationships; assist in developing new clients and opportunities.
Document client work and conclusions in the client tax file.
Identify, develop, recommend, and implement efficient and effective tax strategies.
Manage teams of senior managers, managers, tax seniors, and associates.
Qualifications
Bachelor’s Degree in Accounting, Finance, Economics, or Statistics (required).
Master’s Degree in Accounting or Taxation (preferred).
Ten (10) or more years of relevant tax experience and/or public accounting, private industry accounting, or consulting/professional services experience (required).
Financial Services industry experience supporting Alternative Investment funds—including Venture Capital, Private Equity, Real Estate, and Hedge Funds (preferred).
Proficiency in the taxation of partnerships (preferred).
CPA or Licensed Attorney, or Internal Revenue Service Enrolled Agent (required).
CFP or Master’s in Tax (preferred).
Experience with Microsoft Office Tools (Excel, PowerPoint, Word, Outlook) and Adobe Acrobat (preferred).
Experience with tax research databases (preferred).
Proficient in tax compliance process software (preferred).
Superior verbal and written communication skills.
Ability to effectively delegate work as needed.
Strong analytical, research, and critical thinking skills, and decision‑making skills.
Capacity to work well in a team environment.
Capability to develop and manage a team of tax professionals.
Ability to compose written tax advice.
Capability to effectively develop and maintain client relationships.
Executive presence and ability to act as primary client contact for preparation and presentation of issues and resolutions to clients.
