Summary This position is eligible for the Education Debt Reduction Program (EDRP) – a student loan payment reimbursement program. Applicants must meet specific eligibility requirements per VHA policy and submit an EDRP application within four months of appointment. Program approval and award amount (up to $200,000) and eligibility period (one to five years) are determined by the VHA Education Loan Repayment Services program office after review of the application. Former EDRP participants are ineligible to apply.

Qualifications To qualify for this position you must meet the basic requirements listed below, as well as any additional requirements (if applicable) in the job announcement. Applicants pending completion of training or license requirements may be referred and tentatively selected but may not be hired until all requirements are met. Currently employed physicians in VA who met the requirements for appointment under the previous qualification standard at the time of their initial appointment are deemed to have met the basic requirements of the occupation.

Basic Requirements

United States Citizenship: Non‑citizens may only be appointed when no qualified citizens are available, in accordance with VA policy.

Doctor of Medicine or equivalent degree in medicine or osteopathic medicine from an institution approved by VA.

Current full and unrestricted license to practice medicine or surgery in a U.S. state, territory, or the District of Columbia.

Residency training in an accredited core specialty leading to board certification, approved by either the ACGME or the AOA, or other residency followed by at least five years of verified U.S. practice deemed appropriate by the local Medical Staff Executive Committee.

Residents in accreditation programs who meet basic requirements are eligible as Physician Resident Providers (PRPs) on an intermittent or fee‑basis, with limited scope of practice under supervision.

Proficiency in spoken and written English.

Board certified in Internal Medicine or Family Medicine. Preferred: Board certified in Geriatric Medicine.

Experience as Medical Director in VA CLC or post‑acute/long‑term care setting (reference: https://www.va.gov/ohrm/QualificationStandards/).

Physical requirements: Visual acuity, keen hearing, clear speech, manual dexterity; ability to walk, stand, stoop, sit, bend, pull, push for extended periods; transfer patients; don protective clothing in isolation; occasionally work with combative patients; remain functional in stressful situations; complete annual employee health requirements (e.g., TB screening).

Duties

Provide direct patient/resident care, including comprehensive management of physical, psychological, emotional, social, and spiritual needs.

Supervise other CLC physicians and nurse practitioners; lead weekly administrative, process, or educational meetings.

Contribute to performance improvement and quality of care, including mortality and morbidity reviews, peer reviews, and occurrence screens.

Prepare for and participate in surveys.

Coordinate admissions with the Admissions Coordinator, ensuring safe and appropriate CLC admissions, maximizing bed utilization, and maintaining transparency.

Support and direct the teaching mission at the CLC in coordination with the Medical Facility and outside teaching organizations.

Communicate with staff and leadership, issuing awareness briefs, and conducting weekly huddles with Section Chiefs.

Act as Acting Section Chief of Geriatrics and Extended Care when needed.

Participate in service and/or medical center committees as assigned and comply with all quality performance measures and improvement programs.

Perform other duties assigned by the Chief of Geriatrics and Extended Care, Chief of Medicine, Chief of Staff, and REC ICC.
