Engineering Manager, Sensor Intelligence (Edge AI)

We are looking for an Engineering Manager to lead a team of embedded machine learning engineers building scalable, edge‑AI algorithms deployable on constrained wearable devices. The team will design, optimize, and maintain ML algorithms that transform raw physiological signals into robust real‑time insights.
Responsibilities
Lead and develop a high‑performing team: manage, mentor, and support Sensor Intelligence Engineers focused on embedded ML.
Own edge‑deployed algorithms: oversee design, implementation, and maintenance of ML algorithms on WHOOP’s wearable platform.
Collaborate with cross‑functional partners: work closely with Data Science, WHOOP Labs, Firmware, Software, and Product.
Optimize for performance and power: balance accuracy, latency, memory usage, and power consumption using model compression, quantization, etc.
Champion engineering rigor: enforce best practices for testing, code quality, documentation, and observability.
Contribute to technical strategy: shape the roadmap for edge AI, tooling, and safe model updates in the field.
Support recruiting and org building: partner with recruiting to attract top embedded ML talent and shape the culture.
Qualifications
Proven experience as a technical leader managing multiple teams or a growing engineering organization.
Experience growing high‑level individual contributor careers at the staff level or higher.
5+ years in signal processing, machine learning, embedded systems, or a related field, including 2+ years in a people‑management or technical‑lead role.
Strong proficiency in C/C++, with additional experience in Python or similar languages for prototyping.
Hands‑on experience developing and optimizing ML models or algorithms for embedded systems.
Ability to lead projects end‑to‑end and collaborate with cross‑functional partners.
Excellent written and verbal communication skills.
Passion for building high‑performing teams and scaling systems to support WHOOP’s mission.
Relocation This role is based in WHOOP’s office in Boston, MA. The successful candidate must be prepared to relocate if necessary to work out of the Boston, MA office.

Compensation and Benefits The U.S. base salary range for this full‑time position is $150,000 – $210,000. Salary ranges are determined by role, level, and location. Individual pay is based on job‑related skills, experience, performance, and education. In addition to the base salary, the successful candidate will receive a generous equity package, benefits, and other compensation aligned with WHOOP’s mission.
