Detailed Description:

The university seeks an individual with a strong interest in working at a mission‑driven, faith‑based institution. The Assistant Director (AD) of Operations serves an integral role on a team that ensures the facilities are welcoming and engaging for our diverse campus community and guests and is reflective of our Catholic mission. The AD is responsible for overseeing the daily operation of the University Center and Student Life Pavilion; managing student employee training; supervising a diverse team of student employees and five custodial staff; and providing leadership for outreach to potential customers and guests to generate revenue.

Duties and Responsibilities:

Routine Operations and Maintenance Obligations of the University Center:

Coordinate and monitor accurate set‑up for all special events occurring in or around the UC/SLP to ensure client needs are met and proper use of facility and equipment.

Open and lock scheduled facilities.

Deliver and receive audio‑visual equipment; perform audio‑visual and physical set‑ups as required.

Assist in the management and oversight of the student assistant, operations and special events budgets.

Ensure students complete rounds of facilities as per protocol and address needs as necessary.

Strive to ensure the physical environment of the UC/SLP is welcoming to our diverse community members and address issues immediately when they arise.

Responsible for safety, security, lock‑up of buildings; enforce UC/SLP policies and regulations; prepare accident, missing item, incident, and personnel reports; assist in the supervision, coordination, and evaluation of custodial services.

Perform daily routine checks of all interior and exterior levels of the UC and SLP; report malfunction of lights, doors, locks, sound system, and other related building equipment; address noted problems or areas of concern.

Reset fire and other building alarm systems as required.

Conduct a physical inventory of UC/SLP furnishings and equipment twice a year.

Ensure policies related to assembly, posting, etc. are adhered to in and around the UC/SLP.

Seek energy efficiencies and implement sustainable best practices for college unions.

Complete an annual inventory of all equipment and update inventory management system.

Personnel Responsibilities:

Coordinate student employee training to ensure uniformity in excellent guest services, intolerance training, emergency procedures, and workplace safety.

Serve as the primary supervisor for approximately 30 student employees.

Train, supervise, evaluate, and schedule student employees who serve as UC/SLP Operations employees, including senior student employees.

Review for accuracy and approve payroll timecards for all UC/SLP Operations student employees.

Maintain all other personnel records necessary for the proper operation of the University Center and Student Life Pavilion.

Create, implement and evaluate a student employee development program based on learning outcomes.

Develop, implement and assess annual training and ongoing custodial staff development programs based on learning outcomes.

Provide general supervision of University Center and Student Life Pavilion student employees and custodial staff in the absence of area supervisors.

Marketing/Client Support Responsibilities:

Help lead a vision for the UC/SLP to be a highly interactive and welcoming space for guests and community members. Initiate and model proactive engagement with guests and support student employees in modeling similar services.

Provide leadership for the marketing of UC/SLP facilities and services to internal and external existing and prospective clients.

Work in collaboration with the Director, Scheduling Manager and Director of Hospitality Services to identify creative ways to increase room rentals and revenue generation.

Bi‑annually benchmark room rental and associated fees with comparable sites in the San Diego area to ensure we maintain a competitive edge.

Greet and assist UC/SLP guests and clientele when student assistants are unavailable.

Monitor the building environment to ensure comfort of guests.

Work with UC/SLP clientele and staff, program advisors, dining service personnel, public safety, and other University officials in conjunction with various events held in the building to ensure proper event management, ticket and crowd control, and general safety and compliance with university policies.

Safety and Emergency Responsibilities:

Function as primary on‑call contact for minor building emergencies.

Respond in person to major building emergencies as per protocol.

Serve as the building safety representative during fire drills, alarms and other emergencies.

Inventory and update UC/SLP hazardous chemical inventory and ensure that accurate MSDS sheets are on file.

Special Conditions of Employment:

Must be available for on‑call responsibilities and respond to campus for UC/SLP emergencies (infrequently).

Occasionally conduct official building tours.

Hours of position: Tuesday - Saturday 11:00 AM - 7:30 PM (varies based on business needs).

Background check : Successful completion of a pre‑employment background check.

Degree Verification Requirement : Persons offered employment in this position will be required to provide official education transcripts for degree verification purposes.

Job Requirements:

Minimum Qualifications:

Bachelor's degree required.

3 years of full‑time experience in college unions, residential life, student activities, hospitality services or related field required.

1‑year supervisory experience required.

Budgetary experience, including payroll, required.

Preferred Qualifications:

Master's degree in Student Development, Student Affairs, Higher Education Leadership or related field preferred.

Staff development experience strongly preferred.

Proven experience with marketing and client development.

Ability to operate basic audio‑visual equipment systems.

Performance Expectations - Knowledge, Skills and Abilities:

Ability to lead and supervise college‑age individuals and custodial staff.

Ability to interpret and carry out UC/SLP policy as it relates to the activities of individuals or groups occupying the University Center/Student Life Pavilion.

Ability to work independently under minimal supervision and respond to ever‑changing deadlines and multiple priorities.

Serve as an active and collaborative member of the student life team.

Ability to reason logically, draw valid conclusions, and make appropriate recommendations.

Possess strong skills in the use of equipment and tools identified below.

Ability to maintain a positive attitude and calm demeanor during challenging situations.

Knowledge of the philosophy of college unions.

A proven history of demonstrating outstanding customer service skills.

The ability to interact and collaborate with internal colleagues as well as clients.

The ability to resolve problems in an effective and efficient manner.

Proven fiscal responsibility and accountability with an understanding of revenue generation, payroll management, etc.

Demonstrate ability to create, implement and evaluate staff development programs for students and custodial staff, using learning outcomes.

Posting Salary:

$5,858.67 - $5,985.00 per month; Excellent Benefits.
