About the Role
Echo Books & Media is seeking a highly organized and process‑driven Controller to lead our accounting and HR administrative functions. Reporting directly to the CEO, this role is critical to ensuring financial accuracy, operational compliance, and scalable processes as we enter our next phase of growth.
The ideal candidate is disciplined, systems‑oriented, and thrives in an environment where consistency, structure, and accountability matter. This is a hands‑on, on‑site role based in Brooklyn, for a growth stage company
Key Responsibilities
Maintain all financial transactions; revenue, AP, GL, payroll, month‑end close
Maintain accurate financial records and supporting documentation
Oversee annual audit
Financial Planning and Analysis
Collaborative mindset with a proven ability to work seamlessly across operations, admin, and design teams in a fast‑paced, multidisciplinary environment. Prepare monthly financial and operational reporting packages for management, the Board and lenders (including debt compliance reporting)
Prepare annual budget budgeting and periodic reforecasts
Analyze and report on key metrics (KPIs) and performance against targets/benchmarks/budgets: Lead strategic initiatives and projects such as profitability and cost improvement initiatives
Implement and streamline our processes and systems to provide timely operational decision‑making support and drive profitable growth
Provide cash projections and anticipated capital needs
Controls, Compliance & Procedures
Maintain and enforce financial and HR SOPs
Strengthen internal controls across cash, inventory, labor, and payroll
Support external tax, legal, and audit partners
HR & People Operations
Oversee payroll accuracy and timekeeping integrity
Maintain employee files, compliance documentation, and HR records
Administer benefits and support open enrollment
Systems & Process Improvement
Manage accounting, payroll, and HR systems; support commission/payroll integrations
Improve accuracy, visibility, and efficiency across Finance and HR workflows
Build disciplined, auditable, and repeatable processes
Qualifications
5+ years of progressive accounting experience
Bachelor’s degree in finance, accounting or business management
Strong Financial analysis experience with full P&L ownership
CPA strongly preferred
Strong GAAP knowledge and hands‑on accounting skills
Highly organized with excellent follow‑through
Experience overseeing payroll and HR compliance preferred
Publishing industry experience preferred
Excellent financial reporting skills
Strong knowledge of modeling/forecasting, business planning, budgeting and management reporting
Track record of creating value through data analytics
Proven track record developing both Accounting and Operations policies and procedures

Pay: $110,000 metro area - $150,000 per year
