Ballinger | Leafblad is honored to partner with Medica Foundation on the search for the next Executive Director of the Medica Foundation. Following the remarkable 25-year tenure of JoAnn Birkholz, this search represents a significant leadership transition for one of the region’s most respected health-focused foundations. As the charitable giving arm of Medica, a nonprofit health plan, the Foundation invests in community-led efforts that give everyone a fair and just opportunity to be as healthy as possible. Guided by principles of equity, collaboration, and trust-based philanthropy, the Foundation focuses on behavioral health, early childhood health, and rural health, while also advancing innovative, multi-year initiatives that address the root causes of health disparities. The next Executive Director will lead the Foundation into its next chapter by shaping strategy, strengthening partnerships, and amplifying Medica’s impact across the communities it serves.
SUMMARY The Executive Director of the Medica Foundation provides leadership and direction to advance the Foundation’s mission, vision, values and programs. This position reports to both the Vice President of Public Affairs, and the Foundation Board Chair. The Executive Director is responsible for strategy, governance, operations, key partnerships, and internal/external representation and works closely with executive leadership. This position requires strong expertise in Minnesota’s philanthropic, nonprofit, and health care ecosystem as well as a demonstrated commitment to advancing health equity and Trust-Based Philanthropy principles.
QUALIFICATIONS
Minimum of 10 years of progressive leadership experience in philanthropy, nonprofit, social responsibility, or related fields.
Strategic leadership experience guiding an organization or portfolio through growth, change, or an inflection point.
Ability to shape and execute grantmaking strategy informed by data, community insight, and emerging issues.
Knowledge of philanthropy, including grantmaking, evaluation, and community engagement.
Experience working with boards on strategy and governance.
Strong relationship-building skills across sectors and communities.
Demonstrated commitment to equity and community-led approaches.
Experience leading and developing teams.
Trust-Based Philanthropy, impact investing, and health sector experience helpful.
Experience working in both urban and rural markets in Minnesota helpful.
Familiarity or knowledge of corporate philanthropy helpful.
Minimum Bachelor’s degree, advanced degree helpful.
COMPENSATION AND BENEFITS The salary range for this position is $165,000 - $220,000.
