Minnesota Transportation Museum – Board of Directors – Job Description The Minnesota Transportation Museum (MTM) Board of Directors provides strategic leadership, fiduciary oversight, and mission‑driven guidance to advance MTM’s vision to educate, inspire, entertain, and engage our community through the preservation and interpretation of historic transportation. Board members serve as ambassadors for MTM, championing our programs, events, partnerships, and long‑term sustainability.

Key Responsibilities

Uphold MTM’s mission, values, bylaws, and organizational policies.

Participate in strategic planning, goal‑setting, and organizational evaluation.

Provide oversight to ensure compliance, ethical operations, and long‑term stability.

Fiduciary & Legal Oversight

Approve annual budgets, financial reports, and major organizational decisions.

Ensure responsible financial stewardship and risk management.

Support sustainable growth through informed, mission‑aligned decision‑making.

Fundraising & Resource Development

Actively support MTM’s fundraising efforts, including annual appeals, events, donor cultivation, and major campaign initiatives.

Make a personally meaningful annual financial contribution.

Leverage personal and professional networks to strengthen MTM’s donor and partner pipeline.

Advocacy & Community Engagement

Serve as an ambassador for MTM in the community.

Promote MTM events, programs, and initiatives through personal networks and community partnerships.

Uphold and model MTM’s commitment to inclusiveness, education, and unmatched guest experience.

Board Participation & Collaboration

Attend and actively participate in scheduled board meetings (typically monthly).

Serve on at least one board committee or working group.

Support and advise the Executive Director as appropriate.

Engage in ongoing board development, training, and self‑evaluation.

Qualifications

Passion for MTM’s mission and the preservation of transportation history.

Experience in one or more relevant fields: nonprofit leadership, fundraising, finance, law, education, marketing, rail/transportation, community development, volunteer engagement, or strategic planning.

Ability to collaborate, communicate effectively, and contribute time, talent, and resources.

Commitment to diversity, accessibility, and next‑generation engagement.

Term & Expectations

Standard board term: 3 years, renewable pending board approval.

Expected time commitment: 4–8 hours per month, depending on meetings, events, or committee work.

Attend MTM events when possible to support community presence and donor relations.
