Senior Development Engineer Magna International is inviting applications for a Senior Development Engineer position located in Troy, Michigan. The role focuses on advancing sustainable, high-performance materials and technologies for automotive exterior applications.

The Senior Development Engineer will lead the development of new material technologies aligned with the company’s sustainability objectives, coordinate cross‑functional research and scale‑up activities, and contribute to patentable innovations.

Key Responsibilities Senior Development Engineer will:

Lead R&D projects per the Innovation Development Process and coordinate with global PPD, Business Development, WCM, ESE, customers, and suppliers.

Analyze global and automotive trends affecting vehicle exteriors and support the Core Product Manager in executive decision making.

Track project issues, costs, timing, and prepare engineering estimates for manufacturing and capital costs.

Develop polymer processing expertise in thermoplastics, thermosets, injection, compression, and coatings; advise on polymer equipment selection and installation.

Apply for patents, support SR&ED claims, and prepare technical reports and presentations.

Build relationships for sustainability, ADAS/LIDAR, and photovoltaic projects; act as an expert on carbon‑negative fillers and renewable materials.

Mentor participants to reduce vehicle environmental impact and qualify materials with OEM support.

Lead carbon‑negative filler readiness through validation, scale‑up, and integration into production.

Qualifications Minimum requirements:

Master’s degree in Engineering Management, Industrial and Systems Engineering, or related field.

24 months of related experience as a Sr. Development Engineer or Product Development Engineer, including experience in increasing the Technical Readiness Level (TRL) of carbon‑negative and bio‑derived materials.

Expertise in polymer additives, thermokinetic mixing, vibration‑assisted molding, CAE software (SpinFire, Moldflow), surface modification techniques, and PFAS‑free coatings.

Strong analytical skills using DSC, TGA, FTIR, SEM, optical spectrometry, ASTM, SAE, ORIGIN, and MINITAB.

Experience conducting Design of Experiments (DOE) and wind tunnel evaluations for coatings and advanced materials.

Excellent communication skills, ability to develop technical presentations, and experience with capital request preparation.

Compensation and Benefits 8:00 a.m. – 5:00 p.m., Monday – Friday; $93,000.00 per year.
