Senior Staff Attorney – Insurance Defense
Join The Hartford in a senior in‑house role focused on litigation throughout the Greater San Francisco Bay Area and surrounding regions. Remote work is available; the successful candidate will travel periodically within Northern California.
Responsibilities
Handle complex, high‑exposure litigation cases in Premises Liability, Products Liability, Construction Site accidents, and Commercial/Personal Automobile accidents.
Analyze intricate substantive and procedural legal and factual issues, conduct extensive legal research, and independently develop and present defense strategies.
Prepare complex pleadings, written discovery, depositions, motions, and briefs to support defense strategies without supervision.
Provide timely communications, legal advice, and other services to clients and Claims customers in a technology‑driven environment.
Communicate with the court, witnesses, opposing counsel, and co‑lawyers consistently with established office procedures.
Present witnesses and evidence at trials, judicial and administrative hearings, and alternative dispute resolutions.
Research, draft, file, and argue motions on behalf of clients; provide damage and liability opinions to clients and Claims customers.
Qualifications
JD from an accredited law school and license to practice in California; familiarity with local federal courts.
Knowledge of California courts, especially Northern California.
Member in good standing of applicable Bar Association.
7+ years of legal experience, with documented first‑chair jury trial and/or appellate expertise.
Strong legal research, writing, organizational, and prioritization skills.
Excellent communication, computer, and technological skills with the ability to leverage new software and technologies.
Demonstrated expertise in handling claim cases and litigation.
Compensation Annualized base pay range: $128,000 – $192,000. Base pay may vary based on performance and other factors. Total compensation may include short‑term or annual bonuses, long‑term incentives, and on‑the‑spot recognition.
Travel Remote work with periodic travel within Northern California, primarily in the Greater San Francisco Bay Area.
