ResponsiveEd is looking for a highly experienced and strategic

VP Finance / Controller

to lead our core accounting and related financial functions. This pivotal role will be responsible for the financial integrity of general ledger, payroll, accounts payable, and purchasing, ensuring accurate financial reporting, robust internal controls, and efficient processes within these areas. You'll lead a team of approximately 20 professionals across these specific functions, fostering a culture of accountability and continuous improvement. As a key member of the leadership team, you'll provide critical financial insights and guidance to support the organization's growth and mission. This position is expected to progress, offering the opportunity to expand responsibilities to include broader financial strategy, treasury management, and comprehensive organizational planning and budgeting.

Key Responsibilities: Financial Leadership & Strategy (Controller Functions): Oversee and manage all aspects of general ledger, payroll, accounts payable, and purchasing, ensuring efficiency, accuracy, and compliance. Develop and implement financial policies and procedures for these core accounting areas that align with ResponsiveEd's mission and strategic goals. Contribute to the annual budgeting process by providing accurate data and insights from controlled financial areas. Monitor financial performance within core accounting functions, analyze variances, and provide actionable insights to management. Identify and mitigate financial risks within accounting operations, ensuring compliance with all relevant regulations and accounting standards (GAAP, etc.). Team Leadership & Management: Lead, mentor, and develop a high-performing team of approximately 20 finance professionals, including direct oversight of General Ledger, Payroll, Accounts Payable, and Purchasing departments. Foster a collaborative and results-oriented team environment, promoting professional growth and cross-training. Set clear performance expectations, conduct regular performance reviews, and provide constructive feedback. Optimize team structure and processes to maximize efficiency and effectiveness within their purview. Financial Reporting & Internal Controls: Ensure accurate, complete, and timely closing processes for the general ledger. Maintain and enhance robust accounting systems, leveraging technology to streamline financial processes. Ensure accurate and timely processing of payroll, accounts payable, and purchasing activities, adhering to internal controls and compliance requirements. Manage the preparation of accurate and timely financial statements (income statements, balance sheets, and cash flow statements) for internal and external stakeholders based on data from managed functions. Coordinate and support the annual audit process with external auditors, providing necessary documentation and ensuring timely completion and compliance. Develop and maintain a strong internal control environment within accounting operations to safeguard assets and ensure the integrity of financial data. Ensure compliance with all federal, state, and local financial regulations and reporting requirements for non-profit organizations and charter schools as they pertain to controlled functions.

Qualifications: Bachelor's degree in Accounting, Finance, or a related field; Master's degree preferred. CPA certification preferred. Minimum of 10-15+ years of progressive experience in finance and accounting, with at least 5 years in a leadership role managing a substantial team (10+ individuals) encompassing general ledger, payroll, accounts payable, and purchasing. Preference for experience within a non-profit organization, education sector, or public sector entity, with a solid understanding of GAAP and fund accounting principles. Demonstrated experience in financial planning, budgeting, forecasting, and analysis. In-depth knowledge of internal controls and risk management best practices. Significant expertise in spreadsheets (e.g., Microsoft Excel, Google Sheets) and other office productivity software (e.g., Microsoft Office Suite, Google Workspace). Excellent leadership, communication, and interpersonal skills with the ability to build strong relationships across all levels of the organization. Strong analytical and problem-solving abilities, with a keen eye for detail and accuracy. Proficiency in financial software and enterprise resource planning (ERP) systems. Ability to thrive in a fast-paced, dynamic environment and manage multiple priorities effectively. Demonstrated potential and aspiration for growth into a more senior financial leadership role, encompassing broader strategic financial oversight, treasury functions, and comprehensive organizational planning.
