Controller

The Controller is the
head of the Accounting Department , responsible for the overall daily operations, staff leadership, and accurate financial management of the institution. This is a high-impact role requiring
advanced knowledge of accounting principles (GAAP)
and bank operations, independent judgment, and a commitment to regulatory compliance.
The Controller is responsible for the integrity of the general ledger, the preparation and analysis of monthly financial statements, fixed asset management, and crucial external regulatory reporting (e.g., Call Report, tax filings). This position reports directly to the
CFO and/or President
and is critical in ensuring compliance with all applicable state and federal banking regulations, including the Bank Secrecy Act (BSA).
Essential Functions The Controller manages and directs the core financial and accounting functions of the bank/credit union.
Financial Management & Reporting Direct and oversee all accounting operations , including the general ledger, accounts payable, receivables, and fixed assets. Manage the
month-end and year-end close process , coordinating accruals, prepaid expenses, depreciation, investment income, and other adjustments. Prepare and analyze accurate monthly financial statements , ensuring compliance with
GAAP . Oversee
Treasury operations , including daily liquidity monitoring and overnight arbitrage to maximize returns. Direct
investment accounting , reviewing reports and reconciling all investment accounts. Prepare and submit the
Call Report
and assist with annual IRS tax returns (Forms 945 and 990) and escheatment filings. Maintain the
fixed asset records
and manage the annual inventory process. Assist the CFO with
cost controls
and departmental expense monitoring.
Compliance & Audit Ensure
ongoing, strict departmental compliance
with all state and federal banking regulations, including
BSA/AML, OFAC, and the USA PATRIOT Act . Provide necessary documentation and support for
internal and external audits . Implement corrective actions
and maintain department compliance with established audit standards. Develop, test, and implement robust accounting
policies and procedures
(manual and system-based).
Leadership & Administration Provide
direct staff oversight , including hiring, training, supervising, coaching, and conducting performance evaluations and disciplinary actions. Manage department staffing schedules, quality control, and resource allocation to ensure
maximum efficiency and productivity . Serve as the
primary resource
for resolving accounting inquiries and providing cross-functional support to other departments. Uphold high standards for
internal and external member service . Lead or participate in
special projects
and compile reports for senior management. Maintain awareness of
financial industry trends
and system updates (e.g., Fiserv Premier).
Required Qualifications Education & Experience Bachelors degree in
Accounting, Finance, or Business
(minimum of 15 credit hours in accounting, including Intermediate Accounting I and II). A minimum of
three (3) years of supervisory experience , preferably within a financial institution. Preferred:
CPA license; ongoing professional development through industry training.
Knowledge & Skills Advanced knowledge of GAAP , specifically as applied to financial institutions. Proficiency with accounting systems
and Microsoft Office Suite (especially Excel). Working knowledge of Fiserv Premier is strongly preferred. Proven ability to manage budgeting, payroll, and complex financial recordkeeping. Strong
analytical and problem-solving skills
for reviewing and interpreting financial data and resolving complex issues. Excellent written, verbal, and interpersonal
communication skills . Demonstrated ability to
train, motivate, and develop staff .
Other Requirements Ability to exercise a high degree of
discretion, integrity, and confidentiality . Must hold a valid Texas drivers license and maintain appropriate insurance (if driving is required).
