Summary
We are looking for a hands-on Principal Architect to lead our product platform's technical architecture and design. This leader will architect a scalable platform encompassing API tier, microservices for commerce, and IoT-connected products while seamlessly integrating with third parties. This leader will be responsible for establishing the technical foundation that enables superior pet care digital solutions while ensuring scalability, security, performance, and the implementation of industry best practices.
Key Responsibilities
Architecture Design & Implementation
Design and implement the overall technical architecture for our core commerce and IoT platform, including API Gateway, microservices, authentication, data, and integrations. Establish architecture principles, standards, and patterns to ensure consistency and quality. Create and maintain architecture documentation, including diagrams, models, and technical specifications. Be able to write code and develop proof-of-concepts to validate architectural decisions and educate the team.
Microservices & Domain-Driven Design
Design microservices architectures around key business domains, supporting our direct-to-consumer e-commerce and IoT-connected devices. Apply domain-driven design principles to align services with business capabilities. Implement event-driven architectures to support real-time capabilities across the platform.
IoT & Connected Products Architecture
Design the architecture for device connectivity, management, and data ingestion from IoT pet products. Establish protocols and standards for secure device communication and authentication. Architect real-time data processing pipelines for IoT telemetry and events. Design edge computing capabilities to enable innovative features on connected pet products.
Integration & API Design
Design comprehensive API strategies for internal services and external partners. Establish API design standards, security policies, and governance models. Architect integration patterns for veterinary services, pet health providers, and other third-party systems.
Qualifications And Experience
10+ years of software development experience with at least 8 years in architectural roles. Proven experience with designing and implementing large-scale distributed systems and microservices architectures. Hands-on experience with cloud application development and deployment (AWS and/or Azure). Strong background in secure, scalable API design and management. Experience with IoT architectures and connected device platforms.
Skills and Competencies
Technical Expertise: Knowledge of best-practice cloud architecture patterns, distributed systems, and scalable and secure microservices. Hands-On Development: Ability to not only define architectures but also participate in implementing core platform components. IoT & Connectivity: Knowledge of IoT protocols (MQTT, CoAP) and experience with real-time data processing. Architecture & Design: Mastery of architecture design patterns, domain-driven design, and documentation. Leadership: Strong mentoring abilities with experience guiding development teams. Problem-Solving: Outstanding analytical skills to balance technical excellence with business needs. Entrepreneurial Mindset: A proactive, innovative approach to solving complex architectural challenges.
