Duties And Responsibilities
Performs responsible work in the Department of Police involving requests for services of police personnel.
Receives telephone complaints, emergency calls, and requests for the services of police officers in an often-stressful call center environment.
This position reports to a Shift Supervisor in the Communication Center.
Answers all incoming emergency phone calls to the Communications Center.
Handles many calls that are 911 emergencies and may involve homicides, suicides, armed robberies, domestic disputes, and various forms of violent and non-violent crime.
Obtains and records information quickly and efficiently so information can be disseminated to police officers in the field via the dispatcher.
Inputs the information into the computer for dissemination of the information by the dispatcher to the field units.
Trains and assists new employees assigned to the division.
Answers inquiries from constituents via the 311 system as needed after regular business hours.
Must attain and maintain DELJIS and APCO certifications.
Performs all related work as required.
Education And Experience Graduation from high school or GED equivalency; some knowledge in the operation of an answering service while under stress; or any equivalent combination of experience and training that provides the required knowledge, skills, and abilities.
Knowledge: Good knowledge of the geography, streets, roads, and highways of the City of Wilmington and the surrounding New Castle County region. Must be able to obtain knowledge of a variety of operating procedures and systems including but not limited to 911 Standard Operating Procedures, the Delaware Criminal Code, Department of Motor Vehicle Code, Delaware Helpline Referral Manual, Language Line Linguist Services, APCO Manuals and Procedures, Position Power Map, and Shot Spotter Flex Alerts.
Skills: Must be able to answer calls and inquiries while communicating effectively, remain calm under stress, and establish and maintain effective working relationships with other employees and the public.
Abilities: Ability to learn the operations of a computer-aided dispatch system. Must be able to work rotating shifts, overtime, and be held over as needed. Ability to type 45 words per minute.
Working Conditions And Physical Requirements All selected applicants must pass a criminal background investigation, drug test, and pre-employment physical.
Physical Requirements: Occasionally lift up to 25 pounds.
Vision: Close vision and ability to adjust focus.
Working Conditions: Indoor call center work environment.
Location and Schedule: Wilmington Police Department.
Total Compensation
Salary Administration: New employees are hired at the starting salary up to the median salary/step four based on qualifications and internal equity within the classification. Merit increases are given after a satisfactory performance review.
