Zurich is seeking an Umbrella Executive Underwriter or AVP underwriting Director to join our Los Angeles team! Excess Casualty/Umbrella is a key business segment within National Accounts, focused on attracting top customer advocates who possess a sales mindset, strong technical underwriting skills, and solution-focused problem‑solving abilities.
As an Umbrella Executive Underwriter or AVP Underwriter you will handle new and renewal Umbrella business. You will fully apply and hone underwriting and marketing skills while building relationships with select brokers across Los Angeles, CA.
The Umbrella is responsible for:
Serving as a customer industry advocate with a focus on improving the customer experience by understanding risk and offering best end‑to‑end solutions for insurance needs.
Using a disciplined approach to exposure evaluation, risk assessment, and pricing.
Using risk insights, data, and models to drive informed decisions at point of sale.
Identifying gaps and aligning Zurich’s product and value proposition to deliver contract certainty the customer needs.
Demonstrating strong analytical skills and executing as an innovative advisor.
Underwriting and generating new and renewal business.
Market‑facing and production within the growing Umbrella division.
Administering and monitoring underwriting rules and guidelines, insurance laws, regulations, and rating manual rules.
Developing and maintaining agency and broker relationships.
Working within broad limits and authorities on highly complex assignments.
This role will be filled at either the Umbrella Executive Underwriter or AVP underwriting Director level. The hiring manager will determine the appropriate level based upon the selected applicant’s experience and skill set relative to the qualifications listed for this position.
Basic Qualifications Executive Underwriter – Excess
High School Diploma or Equivalent and 5 or more years of experience in underwriting or market‑facing area.
High School Diploma or Equivalent and 10 or more years of experience in claims or underwriting support area.
Zurich Certified Insurance Apprentice including an associate degree and 3 or more years of experience in underwriting or market‑facing area.
Zurich Certified Insurance Apprentice including an associate degree and 8 or more years of experience in claims or underwriting support area.
Knowledge of Microsoft Office.
Experience working on time restraints for quotes on new and renewal business.
Experience working in a team environment.
AVP – Underwriting Director – Excess
High School Diploma or Equivalent and 7 or more years of experience in underwriting or market‑facing area.
High School Diploma or Equivalent and 14 or more years of experience in claims or underwriting support area.
Zurich Certified Insurance Apprentice including an associate degree and 5 or more years of experience in underwriting or market‑facing area.
Zurich Certified Insurance Apprentice including an associate degree and 12 or more years of experience in claims or underwriting support area.
Experience with Microsoft Office.
Preferred Qualifications
Bachelor’s degree.
Strong verbal and written communication skills.
Microsoft Office experience.
Your pay at Zurich is based on your role, location, skills, and experience. We follow local laws to ensure fair compensation. You may also be eligible for bonuses and merit increases. If your expectations are above the listed range, we still encourage you to apply—your unique background matters to us. The pay range for this position is $113,100.00‑$276,900.00, with specific ranges for the Executive Underwriter ($113,100.00‑$209,300.00) and Underwriting Director ($149,500.00‑$276,900.00) roles and short‑term incentive bonuses (15% for the Executive Underwriter, 20% for the Director).
