Systems Administrator (Linux) The University of Chicago Booth School of Business

The Systems Administrator (Linux) is responsible for supporting the organization’s server and storage infrastructure, ensuring reliable operation, and assisting with routine upgrades and maintenance. This role actively performs day‑to‑day administration of Linux servers, monitoring system health, and troubleshooting hardware/software issues. The administrator works collaboratively with senior staff and other IT team members to resolve technical issues and maintain overall system performance. This position participates in routine backup and recovery operations and ensures continuous compliance with organizational IT policies and security standards.

Compensation range: $105K – $125K (depending on experience and skills).

Principal Duties and Responsibilities

Perform day‑to‑day administration of Linux servers, including applying patches, monitoring system health, and troubleshooting hardware/software issues.

Assist in the implementation of server upgrades and migrations under guidance of senior staff.

Maintain and update automation scripts and tools such as Shell and Ansible.

Analyze system logs, identify potential issues, and monitor and tune system performance.

Install and configure new hardware and software, applying operating system updates, patches, and configuration changes.

Respond to technical support requests, answer inquiries, and resolve open issues within established service level agreements related to servers and networks.

Collaborate with team members to identify and address recurring problems, escalating complex issues to senior administrators as needed.

Knowledge, Skills and Experience

Degree required; bachelor’s in computer science or a related field strongly preferred.

Minimum five years of systems administration experience.

Relevant experience and industry‑recognized professional and technical certifications preferred.

Experience managing networked servers, knowledge of switches and firewalls, network services, system utilities, hardware installation, and operating/application system installation.

Experience in a multi‑platform network environment, client support, and backup and restore technologies.

Expertise with system administration issues in a large and complex client‑server environment.

Knowledge of backup technology, monitoring, and other automated systems‑management technologies.
