Aviation Engineering Manager - Chelmsford, MA
Hoyle Tanner is seeking an Aviation Engineering Manager to lead and coach our aviation and project engineers. If you enjoy mentoring while developing technical talent, we encourage you to apply. This position can be based out of our Portsmouth, NH, Manchester, NH, or Chelmsford, MA office.
Key Responsibilities
Serve as the primary coach for engineers specializing in airport civil engineering, including airside, landside, and building/terminal/ infrastructure projects.
Foster a culture of learning and professional growth through structured mentorship, skills assessments, and individualized development plans.
Assist in the acceleration and advancement of staff from early career to project engineer roles, guiding those pursuing technical or leadership paths.
Collaborate with department heads to align staff development with airport project needs and career advancement goals.
Lead and promote internal knowledge‑sharing and training programs under the Hoyle Tanner Training Development program.
Maintain up‑to‑date knowledge of technical skills and tools, serving as a resource and coach.
Design and implement training programs focused on airport engineering technical skills such as 2D drafting and 3D modeling (AutoCAD Civil 3D) for airport site plans, grading plans, and utility planning.
Project management and cost estimation using Microsoft Project for airport projects.
Address hydraulics, hydrology, drainage, and transportation planning relevant to airside and landside infrastructure.
Design and implement training programs focused on airport engineering soft skills, including communication techniques for client discussions, conflict resolution, regulator and funding agency interactions, meeting planning, LEAN Project Management, and consistent technical quality across projects.
Manage all civil engineering staff with 0‑9 years of experience within the airport engineering group, focusing on mentorship, skill development, and career progression.
Continue to support young engineers by encouraging them to pursue professional licenses (EIT, PE).
Identify high‑potential engineers and develop advancement pathways from staff to project engineer levels, partnering with HR as appropriate.
Provide structured feedback, training plans, and coaching to foster accelerated growth for 0‑9‑year engineers.
Collaborate with leadership to forecast staffing and training needs specific to airport civil engineering.
Advocate for engineering excellence, professional development, and innovation in airport infrastructure.
Promote and expand the internal training development programs, ensuring alignment with industry best practices for aviation civil engineering.
Foster a positive, team‑centric culture and mindset among staff.
Monitor, analyze, and manage resource planning for all engineering projects, ensuring efficient allocation of resources to meet project schedules.
Run and lead recurring project manager meetings.
From time to time, this position may serve as a supplement to technical staff in the form of project‑specific project management or senior technical design for large, complex, or unique projects.
Requirements
BS in Civil Engineering (preferred), Electrical Engineering, or Environmental Engineering.
Professional Engineer (PE) licensure required.
Minimum of 15 years of experience, including mentoring or coaching engineering staff and a track record of developing technical talent.
Strong communication, leadership, organizational, problem‑solving skills, and attention to detail.
Salary is contingent on experience.
