Industrial Safety Specialist
Lab: Lawrence Berkeley National Laboratory, 1 Cyclotron Road, Berkeley, CA.
Salary: $119,580.00 - $149,460.00 per year.
Appointment type: Full‑time, career, exempt from overtime.
Responsibilities
Serve as the ALS safety coordinator, developing standards and solutions for new or complex processes, technologies, and health and safety initiatives.
Develop and maintain working relationships with customers, including scientists, building managers, engineers, subcontractors, crafts, maintenance and facilities personnel.
Prepare compliance program documents, appraisal reports, accident reports, training course materials, funding requests and statistics that are technically accurate and complete.
Support ALS Project Management on health and safety issues primarily during construction phases of projects, and may also include design and planning stages.
Act as a technical field construction health and safety technician, providing occupational health and safety support and oversight for moderately complex construction and maintenance projects.
Conduct hazard evaluations and assessments and provide recommendations to prevent exposures to safety hazards.
Participate in Job Hazard Analysis (JHA) quality reviews and trend corrective actions from inspections and audits.
Complete job‑related tasks under direction of the ALS Safety Manager.
Provide timely activity and project status reports regarding customer issues, performance measures and indicators, core technical programs, and other deliverables.
Maintain familiarity with ALOS health and safety policies and stay current with Berkeley Lab and ALS health and safety policies.
Attend scheduled team and division meetings and support a collaborative, team‑building environment.
Maintain familiarity with other program areas within the ALS Safety Team and provide support as needed (user safety, asbestos and lead, noise monitoring, water intrusion mitigation support, chemical exposure monitoring, decommissioning support, exposure assessment).
Coordinate exposure monitoring strategies and maintain IH sampling equipment and calibration records.
Qualifications
BA/BS and 5–7 years of significant and relevant industrial hygiene and safety experience; or an equivalent combination of education and experience.
Demonstrated experience as a construction safety technician or professional with excellent knowledge of OSHA, ANSI, and related safety requirements/regulations.
Direct experience applying OSHA, ANSI and other related safety requirements in a wide variety of construction work environments.
Industrial hygiene experience with collecting personal air samples and writing sampling reports and data interpretation.
Experience collecting lead dust wipe samples, personal and area air samples for asbestos and lead and providing oversight of lead workers.
Proof as an industrial hygienist / industrial safety technician with understanding of OSHA, ANSI and related health and safety requirements.
Experience authoring and managing Work Planning & Control activities in a research or high‑hazard environment.
Excellent written and verbal communication skills to interact with facilities management, EHS management, project managers, and subcontractors.
Ability to build consensus that supports desired actions.
Proficiency with standard business software (word processing, presentation, spreadsheets).
Capable of performing physical requirements including minor lifting (up to 25 lb) and wearing personal protective equipment in a hands‑on safety role.
Desired Skills / Knowledge
Certified Construction Health and Safety Technician (CHST).
Lead sampling and oversight training, working toward CDPH lead certification as a risk assessor / building inspector and project monitor.
Additional occupational health or safety certifications (e.g., CIH or CSP).
Experience in a DOE national laboratory / user facility or other complex research environment.
