Distinguished Engineers are expected to lead through technical contribution.
You will operate as a trusted advisor for our key technologies, platforms and capability domains, creating clear and concise communications, code samples, blog posts and other material to share knowledge both inside and outside the organization.
You will specialize in a particular subject area, but your input and impact will be sought and expected throughout the organization.
Responsibilities
Articulate and evangelize a bold technical vision for your domain
Decompose complex problems into practical and operational solutions
Ensure the quality of technical design and implementation
Serve as an authoritative expert on non‑functional system characteristics, such as performance, scalability and operability
Continue learning and injecting advanced technical knowledge into our community
Handle several projects simultaneously, balancing your time to maximize impact
Act as a role model and mentor within the tech community, helping coach and strengthen the technical expertise and know‑how of our engineering and product community
Own the multi‑year (3‑7) vision for Perimeter Defence, namely platforms used to defend against externally derived network‑centric attacks (L3–L7).
Develop and maintain the comprehensive, multi‑year strategic vision for Perimeter Defence, overseeing platforms critical for defending against external, network‑centric attacks across layers L3 through L7
Test and evaluate emerging technologies via proof‑of‑concept within Capital One, recommending adjustments and leading the scaling of successful POCs to production systems
Act as the escalation point for low‑severity incidents, leading medium and high‑severity incidents to root‑cause analysis determination, action definition and final resolution
Work with partners (other DEs, Product, ISO, etc.) to support the integration, application and consumption of the platforms in their domain, providing expert consultancy and support to maximize platform value for customers
Basic Qualifications
Bachelor's Degree
At least 7 years of experience in Network Engineering and architecture
At least 7 years of experience in Security Engineering and architecture
Preferred Qualifications
Bachelor's or Master's Degree in Computer Science or a related field
10+ years of experience in Network Engineering and architecture
10+ years of experience in Security Engineering and architecture
10+ years of professional experience coding in commonly used languages such as Java, Python, Go, JavaScript/TypeScript, Swift, etc.
8+ years of professional experience in the full lifecycle of system development, from conception through architecture, implementation, testing, deployment and production support
3+ years of experience with public or private cloud technologies
8+ years of experience with Networking (BGP, Wi‑Fi, SD‑WAN, Cloud Networking and Data Center Networking)
Salaries by Location
McLean, VA: $263,900 – $301,200 for Distinguished Engineer
Plano, TX: $239,900 – $273,800 for Distinguished Engineer
Richmond, VA: $239,900 – $273,800 for Distinguished Engineer
