Key Responsibilities

Reviews the physician’s requisition for completeness of information and for specific instructions.

Reviews patient’s medical record to obtain pertinent clinical history and correlates data with exam to be performed; consults with ordering physician if necessary.

Greets patient and verifies patient identification.

Performs non‑invasive vascular examinations utilizing appropriate equipment (e.g., Doppler ultrasound, B‑mode real‑time imaging and color Doppler imaging), including upper and lower extremity arterial and venous duplex, renal duplex, AV fistulas, carotid duplex, aorta and PVR/ABI exams.

Provides referring physicians with preliminary interpretations and prepares preliminary reports for interpreting physicians.

Records and bills for all examinations performed, ensuring all pertinent information is appropriately completed.

Reports any unusual occurrences related to patients, staff, equipment or other departmental concerns directly to the Operations Manager and Technical Director.

Maintains equipment to ensure it is kept clean and in proper working order; notifies the Operations Manager and clinical engineering of any malfunction.

Maintains confidentiality and security of all hospital‑related PHI.

Maintains patient log and statistics.

Maintains the safety, integrity and comfort of the patient at all times.

Recognizes emergency situations and provides assistance to the patient or health‑care team.

Retrieves and communicates test reports to physician offices, nursing units, emergency department or other departments as requested.

Participates in departmental quality improvement meetings.

Assists with the quality improvement program (IAC) process as requested.

Provides instruction to medical students, residents and fellows regarding proper use of equipment and scanning techniques and protocols.

Orders and maintains supplies for the non‑invasive vascular lab.

Performs other duties as needed.

Required Knowledge & Skills

Comprehensive understanding of vascular anatomy, pathophysiology, and hemodynamics to recognize normal and abnormal vascular structures, function, and flow abnormalities.

Demonstrate knowledge and understanding of ultrasound physics, instrumentation, tissue characteristics, and measurements of blood flow, including biological effects of ultrasound.

Familiarity with other diagnostic tests (e.g., clinical laboratory tests, peripheral angiography, CT scans) and ability to integrate vascular ultrasound results with other test results.

Well versed in medical terminology.

Critical thinking and ability to effectively manage emergent situations.

Ability to work independently and take initiative in completing tasks.

Demonstrates superior customer service skills.

Ability to prioritize and manage a variety of tasks.

Excellent communication, organizational and interpersonal skills.

Education / Experience / Licensure / Technical / Other

Education:

Graduate of an accredited Diagnostic Medical Sonography program and registry eligible.

Experience:

Minimum of one (1) year performing a wide range of vascular ultrasound exams.

Certification:

Required to obtain Registered Vascular Technologist (RVT) within six (6) months of employment; additional RDMS preferred. Must maintain active certification through the American Registry of Diagnostic Medical Sonographers. Basic Life Support (BLS) required. Competent in ultrasound reporting systems.

Compensation Range $39.90 – $57.93 per hour. This range is based on minimum job qualifications; base pay considers education, experience, skills, certifications, and organizational needs. BMCHS offers generous total compensation including benefits, bonuses, and additional opportunities.
