In response, Jacobs is expanding its Transmission & Distribution (T&D) operations in North America and is looking for a Senior Protection & Controls (P&C) Engineer in its Energy & Power Solutions to tackle the complexities of decarbonization and utility modernization to deliver a cleaner and more secure energy future.
As a Senior P&C engineer, you will work closely with regional and global T&D delivery teams to support utility and developer clients and operations teams as we expand our energy transition portfolio. You will directly interface with utility/developer clients on P&C methodologies and develop design deliverables for utility upgrades including greenfield/brownfield & AIS/GIS substations, offshore wind facilities, and developer interconnection facilities. Prior experience in the design of utility transmission and distribution systems will be highly regarded.
Responsibilities The successful candidate will demonstrate relevant experience and technical knowledge in Protection and Control applied to transmission and distribution projects for utilities and developers. You will be in a client‑interfacing position and will be responsible for understanding client standards and protection philosophies, providing feedback on application, and fully and independently developing P&C deliverables as required for projects on time and within budget.
As a senior leader, you will mentor and develop team members across North America and globally with Jacobs Global Integrated Delivery (GID). You will work with a cross‑functional team to support the sales and proposal preparation process for new contracts and deliver high‑quality services to clients.
Involvement with professional societies such as IEEE and PES, and participation in industry conferences, seminars, trade shows, and networking events to promote company services and stay updated on industry innovations is a plus.
Qualifications
Bachelor's or Advanced Degree in Electrical Engineering, Electrical Power Engineering or related discipline (Master’s degree counts as 1 year of professional experience).
Licensed Professional Engineer (PE) within the United States and ability to obtain additional PE licenses if needed.
At least 10 years of direct protection and controls design experience with a utility or consulting organization.
Advanced knowledge of protection philosophies and relaying functions including line protection, transformer protection, breaker failure, cap bank protection, communication‑based schemes, differential protection, etc. as applied to high‑voltage substations.
Experience in developing substation protection and control designs, including drawings with panel arrangements, single‑line, three‑line, AC schematics, DC schematics, equipment wiring, and relay panel wiring.
Knowledge and experience with DNP3 & IEC 61850 designs and requirements; ability to develop protection and controls deliverables including logic diagrams.
Ability to perform SCADA communication design for substation P&C projects.
Perform substation AC/DC station service calculations, voltage‑drop calculations, and control/fiber cable sizing and selection.
Experience developing and reviewing related equipment vendor specifications including control house/switchgear building.
Demonstrated ability to perform QA/QC of design calculations, construction drawings, and specifications for protection and controls designs.
Familiarity with Relay Settings acSELerator QuickSet Software.
Experience with CAD platforms such as Autodesk or Bentley products.
Ability to perform field visits and walk‑downs as required for client projects, providing engineering support through construction.
Strong communication and technical writing skills.
Team player with excellent interpersonal, communication, and presentation skills.
