Executive Underwriter or AVP, Underwriting Director – Energy Casualty Zurich Insurance is hiring an experienced Executive Underwriter or AVP, Underwriting Director for our Energy Casualty team. In this role you will market, analyze, and underwrite primary casualty risks, leveraging strong quantitative and qualitative reasoning skills while driving profitable growth. You will operate under the Zurich Way of Underwriting Framework, provide high‑level service to customers, and lead and mentor the team with technical guidance on coverage, program structure, and pricing.

Location: Houston, Texas (open to qualified talent across the country). 15‑20% travel required for targeted marketing, business development, and client engagement events. Remote work is not available.

Hiring Level Position will be filled at either the Executive Underwriter level or AVP, Underwriting Director level. The hiring manager will determine the appropriate level based on the selected applicant’s experience and qualifications.

Responsibilities

Market facing and production, including onsite client stewardship and broker visits.

Management and development of a robust new business and cross‑sell pipeline.

Serve as a customer advocate, improving the customer experience by understanding risk and offering the end‑to‑end solution for insurance needs.

Deliver a disciplined and thorough approach to exposure evaluation, risk assessment, pricing, and documentation.

Use risk insights, data and models to drive informed underwriting decisions at point of sale.

Develop and define program structure recommendations, including cost and loss‑sensitive solutions, based on risk characteristics.

Prepare and present comprehensive referrals, as necessary.

Negotiate and deliver successful outcomes to agents/brokers independently.

Administer and monitor underwriting rules and guidelines, insurance laws, and regulations.

Work within broad limits and authorities on highly complex assignments.

Manage key portfolio indicators within assigned territory, including gross written premium, retention, rate, and profitability.

Mentor and coach early‑career team members.

Represent the company at industry events and contribute to long‑term strategy development and vision.

Executive Underwriter – Basic Qualifications

High School Diploma or equivalent and 5 or more years of experience in underwriting or market facing; OR

High School Diploma or equivalent and 10 or more years of experience in claims or underwriting support; OR

Zurich‑approved Apprenticeship program with an associate degree and 3 or more years of experience in underwriting or market facing; OR

Zurich‑approved Apprenticeship program with an associate degree and 8 or more years of experience in claims or underwriting support.

Knowledge of Microsoft Office.

Experience working under time restraints for quotes on new and renewal business.

Experience working in a team environment.

AVP, Underwriting Director – Basic Qualifications

High School Diploma or equivalent and 7 or more years of experience in underwriting or market facing; OR

High School Diploma or equivalent and 14 or more years of experience in claims or underwriting support; OR

Zurich Certified Insurance Apprentice with an associate degree and 5 or more years of experience in underwriting or market facing; OR

Zurich Certified Insurance Apprentice with an associate degree and 12 or more years of experience in claims or underwriting support AND

Proficiency in Microsoft Office.

Competence working within time restraints for quotes on new and renewal business.

Experience working in a collaborative, fast‑paced environment.

Preferred Qualifications

Bachelor’s Degree.

Energy casualty or casualty‑driven underwriting experience, including guaranteed cost and loss‑sensitive lines.

Existing network and familiarity within the energy casualty brokerage and client community.

Strong verbal and written communication skills.

Sales execution mindset.

Creative problem‑solving skills.

Microsoft Office experience.

Compensation The combined salary range for this position is $98,500.00–$215,000.00. The proposed salary range for the Executive Underwriter is $98,500.00–$165,000.00, with short‑term incentive bonus eligibility set at 15%. The proposed salary range for the AVP is $130,000.00–$215,000.00, with short‑term incentive bonus eligibility set at 20%. Bonus and merit increase opportunities are available based on performance.
