Join us and discover why Modern Healthcare Magazine named us in its “Top 100 Places to Work.” The PACU at Mercy STL is a phase one recovery for patients who have undergone a surgical procedure or any procedure that required general anesthetic.

The patients come to us and then move on to their phase two area, which can be our ambulatory surgery center to send them home, or one of our inpatient areas. Acuity can range from Med Surg simple straightforward patients to ICU critical patients, which means critical care skills are not only desired, but required for bedside nursing in the PACU.

Someone who has a basic knowledge and experience level with vented patients, vasoactive drips, airway management, chest tubes, all drains, central lines and art lines, for example, are the nurses that succeed best in this area.

We work with many types of surgeons, including but not limited to, Genitourinary, Ear Nose Throat, General surgery, Pediatric, GYN and Bariatric.

The nurses that work in the PACU are expected to work with our adult and pediatric populations and have CALL requirements for weekends and holidays.

We are a self-covered unit and work very closely together.
