Role Overview The Clinical Pharmacy Specialist will serve as the representative of pharmacy expertise within their area, reviewing pharmacy and organizational policies, ensuring drug‑use standards, and maintaining readiness for regulatory audits. They will oversee formulary management, provide drug‑related education, collaborate with hospital departments to evaluate and modify pharmacy services, and assist in training clinical staff. Academic scholarship, including authorship, presentations, and attendance at national meetings, is expected. The specialist will help create and execute collaborative practice opportunities at Children's National.
Responsibilities Order Processing and Accreditation Readiness
Interpret medication orders and oversee packaging, labeling, and distribution of medications.
Input orders into the pharmacy computer system when appropriate.
Maintain distribution skillset of pharmacy operations staff.
Assist in unit inspections and verify accreditation readiness.
Review medication lists for therapeutic duplication, omissions, dosing errors, drug interactions, and allergies.
Interpret and verify new medication orders to ensure appropriate drug, dose, route, and frequency.
Assist nursing staff and other providers with automated dispensing machine questions.
Interventions / Documentation
Perform drug therapy monitoring and intervene on drug dosing, administration, interactions, side‑effects, and monitoring issues.
Complete therapeutic drug monitoring consults and adverse reaction reports.
Document interventions and drug information in patient charts when applicable.
Collaborate with multidisciplinary teams to ensure appropriate medication access.
Actively participate in medication reconciliation.
Work with providers to implement comprehensive medication evaluation and management.
Staff Development and Training
Assist with education, training, and supervision of pharmacy students and residents.
Assist with training of new pharmacists.
Provide lectures and drug reviews to professional groups and committees.
Develop system changes and educational programs that reduce errors.
Clinical Services
Ensure appropriate medication use organization‑wide.
Identify drugs/therapies for further evaluation and formulary addition.
Provide timely drug information to physicians, nurses, and other health professionals.
Maintain an evidence‑based clinical practice.
Serve as a clinical specialist resource for pharmacists, nurses, and physicians.
Assist with drug shortage management.
Represent the department on key committees.
Assist pharmacy operations and informatics teams with formulary implementation.
Help design and execute collaborative practice agreements.
Quality Improvement
Lead cost‑saving initiatives and participate in quality improvement projects.
Contribute to order set development and electronic order set builds.
Assist with growth of clinical pharmacy programs organization‑wide.
Participate in performance, quality improvement, and patient safety activities.
Identify high‑cost, high‑use agents and participate in cost‑management initiatives.
Professional Development
Participate in research initiatives with medical units or resident projects.
Attend, present, or moderate at conferences.
Engage in preceptor development and continuing education.
Publish or present in the primary literature.

Qualifications Minimum Education Doctor of Pharmacy (Pharm.D.) – required.
Minimum Work Experience 2 years. At least one year of experience in a pediatric, specialized, or academic/clinical setting. Candidates without a PGY2 residency must have 6 years of experience.
Required Licenses and Certifications Pharmacist eligible for licensure in the District of Columbia (± Maryland and Virginia, specialty dependent) – 90 days. Board Certified Pharmacist (BPS) – 1 year (specialty dependent).
Location & Schedule Primary Location: District of Columbia – Washington, DC (CN Hospital Main Campus). Shift: Variable. Work schedule: VAR.
