About the Role
The Chief Financial Officer (CFO) serves as a strategic partner to the CEO and Board of Directors and is responsible for the overall financial health, sustainability, and integrity of the organization. As a key member of the executive leadership team, the CFO provides leadership and oversight of all financial functions, ensures compliance with nonprofit accounting standards and regulatory requirements, and supports the organization’s mission through sound fiscal management and long-term financial planning.
Key Role Responsibilities Financial Strategy & Leadership
Develop and execute financial strategies that support the organization’s mission, strategic plan, and long-term sustainability.
Serve as a strategic advisor to the CEO and Board on financial planning, risk management, and resource allocation.
Provide timely and accurate financial analysis and reporting to support informed decision-making.
Financial Management & Operations
Oversee all accounting functions, including general ledger, accounts payable/receivable and financial reporting. Work in partnership with HR to oversee payroll functions.
Ensure the preparation of accurate monthly, quarterly, and annual financial statements in accordance with GAAP and nonprofit accounting standards.
Manage cash flow, investments, reserves, and banking relationships.
Establish and maintain internal controls to safeguard organizational assets.
Budgeting & Forecasting
Lead the annual budgeting process in collaboration with executive leadership and program leaders.
Monitor budget performance and provide regular variance analyses.
Develop multi‑year financial forecasts and scenario‑planning models.
Compliance, Audit & Risk Management
Ensure compliance with federal, state, and local financial regulations, including IRS, grant, and donor requirements.
Oversee annual audits and serve as primary liaison with external auditors.
Identify and manage financial risks, including insurance coverage and financial policies.
Grants, Funding & Donor Stewardship
Oversee financial management of grants, contracts, and restricted funds.
Ensure accurate reporting to funders and compliance with grant requirements.
Partner with development leadership to support fundraising efforts through financial analysis, pricing, and donor reporting.
Board & Governance Support
Support the Finance Committee and Audit Committee of the Board.
Prepare and present financial reports, dashboards, and recommendations to the Board.
Assist in the development and review of financial policies and governance practices.
People & Systems Leadership
Lead, mentor, and develop finance and accounting staff.
Evaluate and improve financial systems, processes, and technology to enhance efficiency and accuracy.
Promote a culture of accountability, transparency, and continuous improvement.
Other duties as requested.
Requirements
Bachelor’s degree in accounting, finance, business administration, or related field. CPA, MBA or advanced degree highly desirable.
10+ years of progressive financial leadership experience with significant experience in the nonprofit sector.
Demonstrated experience managing complex budgets, audits and financial operations in a multi‑site or national organization.
Strong knowledge of nonprofit financial management, GAAP, IRS regulations and grant compliance.
Strategic thinker with the ability to translate financial data into actionable insights.
Track record of building high‑performing teams and leading through change.
Experience managing distributed or multi‑site operations.
Experience with fundraising, grants, philanthropy, or corporate partnerships preferred but not mandatory.
Proven success working in cross‑functional teams to build creative solutions.
Collaborative and effective manager with experience supporting the career development of colleagues and direct reports.
High EQ level conducive to collaborating with multiple parts of the business and functioning well with a variety of personality types.
Strong project management, organization, and presentation skills.
