Physician Assistant Orthopedic Surgery
Location: Coos Bay, Oregon
Facility: Bay Area Hospital, 127-bed Level III Trauma Center
Overview:
Bay Area Hospital, the largest healthcare provider on Oregon's Southern Coast, serving a community of over 320,000 residents, is seeking a skilled and dedicated Physician Assistant (PA) to join our expanding Orthopedic Surgery team. This full-time, permanent position offers a rewarding opportunity to work in a collaborative environment committed to providing exceptional patient care.
Key Responsibilities:
  • Collaborate closely with orthopedic surgeons from SCOA to deliver comprehensive orthopedic care.
  • Assist in surgical procedures, including first assist during surgeries, wound closures, fracture fixations, and minor outpatient procedures such as tendon repairs, biopsies, and hardware removals.
  • Conduct comprehensive and problem-focused patient histories and physical examinations.
  • Interpret laboratory and diagnostic results, formulate differential diagnoses, and develop treatment plans within your scope of practice.
  • Perform diagnostic procedures including joint aspirations, injections, reductions, and ultrasound guidance.
  • Manage preoperative and postoperative patient care, including ordering tests, reviewing labs, prescribing medications, and patient education.
  • Provide emergency and inpatient care, including ED consults, floor rounding, and responding to orthopedic call requirements, with shared on-call duties shared fairly among team members.
  • Assist in outpatient and inpatient procedures, including casting, splinting, and application of orthopedic devices.
  • Document patient interactions, medical decisions, and care plans in the electronic medical record (Epic).
  • Participate in multidisciplinary rounds, quality assurance initiatives, and clinical research activities as applicable.
  • Maintain compliance with hospital policies and state regulations regarding scope of practice, including prescribing and dispensing medications and devices.

Qualifications:
  • Board Certified Physician Assistant license with current Oregon licensure or eligibility.
  • Ability to work collaboratively within a team-oriented environment.
  • Strong surgical assist skills and experience in orthopedic procedures preferred, but new graduates with orthopedic rotation experience are encouraged to apply.
  • Excellent clinical, critical thinking, and decision-making skills.
  • Proficiency in electronic health records (Epic) required.
  • Ability to perform physical duties including lifting up to 75 pounds, and assist with patient mobility.
  • Effective communication and interpersonal skills, with a focus on patient-centered care.

Work Environment & Schedule:
  • Full-time, primarily day shifts, with on-call responsibilities shared on a rotating basis, including evenings, weekends, and holidays.
  • Adaptable schedule to accommodate emergency and elective orthopedic services.
  • Onsite amenities include employee health and wellness clinics, childcare and learning centers, and comprehensive support services.

Benefits & Compensation:
  • Competitive base salary starting at $160,000, commensurate with experience.
  • Potential sign-on bonus of up to $10,000.
