Staff Database Engineer

Join the FinTech Reliability Engineering and Infrastructure team in Intuit’s FinTech Business unit. We’re seeking a passionate software engineer to scale infrastructure for 10x growth on our global payroll platform. Responsibilities
Understand monolith-based software systems with complex business logic for ~500K customers. Manage, maintain, and optimize large-scale production and non-production database systems across MSSQL, PostgreSQL (Aurora/RDS), and MySQL (Aurora/RDS). Independently troubleshoot production and pre-production issues and resolve in timely fashion. Serve as subject matter expert for high-availability and disaster recovery: SQL Server Always On/Clustering, Aurora Global Databases, and Patroni clusters. Contribute to AWS infrastructure improvements using deep knowledge of AWS services. Lead performance tuning: T‑SQL/PL/pgSQL query optimization, execution plan reviews, memory/IO configuration. Implement scaling techniques such as database sharding, table partitioning, etc. Design and contribute to AWS infra: RDS, EC2, VPC, Security Groups, Route 53. Drive IaC initiatives with CloudFormation, Jenkins, CI/CD pipelines for automation. Lead migrations from on‑premises to AWS Cloud using AWS DMS. Coordinate DB changes with multiple functional teams, following best practices. Participate in on‑call for production systems, handling pagers/alerts. Own projects from design to production rollout, ensuring stakeholder alignment. Contribute to system upgrades, automation, monitoring enhancements. Create operational runbooks, how‑to articles. Handle high‑pressure incident management. Document technical strategies and report to cross‑functional stakeholders. Support planned weekend activities and out‑of‑hours maintenance windows. Qualifications
Bachelor’s or Master’s degree in Computer Science, IT, or related field. 10+ years as a Database Administrator in high-availability, multi-terabyte production environments. Expertise in MS SQL Server, PostgreSQL (EDB, Aurora), and MySQL. Advanced hands‑on experience with AWS services (RDS, Aurora, EC2, CloudFormation, DMS). Proficiency in scripting for automation (PowerShell, Python). Familiarity with Java, C++, or AI experience. Experience with monitoring tools: Wavefront, Splunk, pgAnalyze, AWS‑native monitoring. Knowledge of Docker and Kubernetes preferred. Additional experience with Oracle and Oracle GoldenGate considered an advantage. Recognized RDBMS certifications such as OCP, MCDBA, Microsoft Certified: Azure Database Administrator Associate. AWS certification preferred. Compensation & Benefits
