Position Overview Position title: Lecturer
Salary range: The UC academic salary scales set the minimum pay at appointment. The current full‑time salary range for this position is $75,301 – $199,722. Starting salary will be commensurate with highest degree, past college‑level teaching experience, relevant industry experience and equity within the department.
Percent time: 11% – 33% (Instructors teaching one course with three hours of lecture per week are normally appointed at 33% time; exact percentages depend on contact hours and other assigned duties).
Anticipated start: Fall semester (only) 8/1/25 – 12/31/25; Spring semester (only) 1/1/26 – 5/31/26; Academic‑year appointments 7/1/25 – 6/30/26
Review timeline: The review of applications for fall semester will be in May, and in October for spring semester.
Position duration: Positions may be for one semester or for the full academic year.

Position Description The Department of Bioengineering at the University of California, Berkeley invites applications for a pool of qualified temporary instructors to teach courses in our department should an opening arise. These are not tenure‑track positions; selected candidates will hold the title of Lecturer. Screening of applicants is ongoing and will continue as needed. The number of positions varies from semester to semester, depending on the needs of the department.
In addition to lecturing responsibilities, general duties for these positions typically include managing and supporting Graduate Student Instructors, holding office hours, running laboratories and demonstrations, assigning grades, advising students, preparing course materials (e.g., syllabus) and maintaining a course website.
UC Lecturers are academic appointees in an organized bargaining unit and are exclusively represented by the American Federation of Teachers – Unit 18.
Qualifications
Basic qualifications (required at time of application): Bachelor's degree or equivalent international degree at the time of application.
Additional Qualifications (required at time of start): Advanced degree or five years teaching and/or industry experience. Applicants must be eligible to work in the U.S.A.
Preferred Qualifications: Advanced degree. Also preferred: teaching experience.
