Department Overview The laboratories at Children’s Hospitals and Clinics provide a full spectrum of laboratory techniques for evaluating pediatric disorders. Laboratories located on the Minneapolis and St. Paul campuses offer inpatient and outpatient services across disciplines such as Chemistry, Hematology, Microbiology, Virology, Serology, Blood Bank, Immunology/Flow Cytometry, Histology and Pathology.

Position Summary Perform blood collections safely and accurately for all age groups and difficulty levels. Monitor patients for reactions, respond to emergencies, troubleshoot and resolve problems. Provide additional services such as telephone answering, manual order scanning, glucose tolerance and sweat chloride collections, and waived laboratory testing. Responsible for specimen receipt, assessment, and pre‑analytical processing per written policies and procedures. Enter information and test orders into the laboratory computer system. Interact with patients, families, and staff in a pleasant, efficient and cooperative manner, exhibiting sensitivity to cultural differences.

Hours & Location Minneapolis and St. Paul campuses. Standard weekdays: 0500, 0530, 0800, 0900. Weekends: 0500 and 0530. Every third weekend. 1.0 FTE.

License / Certification / Registration

Phlebotomy certificate/license is not required but preferred.

Education

High school diploma or equivalent required; Associate degree preferred.

Experience

Experience as a phlebotomist or specimen processing technician in a hospital setting.

1‑year pediatric phlebotomy experience and/or one year in a pediatric clinical laboratory setting, and/or graduation from an accredited medical assistant or phlebotomy program.

Knowledge, Skills & Abilities

Collect specimens using laboratory techniques.

Strong attention to detail and accuracy.

Ability to work in a fast‑paced environment to meet turnaround times.

Outstanding professional and positive customer‑service skills.

Excellent problem‑solving and follow‑up skills.

Experience with healthcare computer information systems.

Solid knowledge of medical terminology.

Highly organized, efficient, multifunctional; independent and team work.

Forward‑thinking, continuously improving processes, tools and resources.

Adaptable, learn new skills, communicate effectively, handle stressful situations.

Salary & Benefits Salary is competitive based on local and national benchmarks, factoring market indicators, candidate qualifications, internal equity and organizational needs. Eligible for medical, dental, vision, retirement, and other fringe benefits. Night, weekend or on‑call work may qualify for shift differentials or premium pay.
