Job Summary Under the general direction and supervision of the exempt optometrist or designee, perform routine optometry procedures using independent professional judgment within the scope of California law, the California Board of Optometry rules, and the policies of The Permanente Medical Group, Inc.
Essential Responsibilities
Conduct and document patient histories, including chief complaints, symptoms, ocular and medical history, medications, current spectacle/contact lenses, and other data necessary to manage vision and ocular health.
Perform minimum and additional testing as needed, employing standard ophthalmic equipment (retinoscopy, subjective refraction, lensometry, visual fields, slit lamp, ophthalmoscopy, gonioscopy, fundus contact lens, tear function testing, Amsler grid, confrontation fields, etc.).
Interpret clinical exam data accurately, provide sound diagnoses, and take appropriate actions to address patients’ complaints, ensuring ocular health and visual needs are met; document impressions and clinical action plans in the chart, including referrals to other providers, long‑term medical management, and optical/therapeutic prescriptions.
Use tests and procedures designed to detect and manage common elderly disorders such as glaucoma, cataracts, and macular degeneration, and communicate actively with optical, ophthalmology, support staff, and fellow OD teams to optimize quality and service.
Maintain all licensing and job requirements (continuous education, CPR, safety training, PPD).
Write or dictate referral and information letters to other providers or agencies, and perform related duties such as completing school forms, DMV, FAA, and similar documents.

Basic Qualifications
OD degree from an accredited School of Optometry (1 year desired but not required).
Optometrist License (California) required at hire.
Therapeutic Pharmaceutical Agents (TPA) required for external employees hired after November 2009 (not required for internal applicants).
Preferred Qualifications
Graduate of an accredited School of Optometry with TPA certification.
Experience coordinating concerns in a designated location and overseeing daily operations.
Willingness to work in a Labor‑Management Partnership environment.
National Provider Identifier (NPI) or ability to obtain one before employment start date.
Reference to Position Specifications outlined in the applicable collective bargaining agreement.
