The Chicago Department of Transportation (CDOT) is seeking a skilled and motivated individual to help lead and manage its Traffic Signal Engineering Section. In this high-impact role, the successful candidate will manage the design and delivery of traffic signal projects, oversee CDOT's customer service requests to improve signal timing and operations, and help shape the future of urban mobility by overseeing the application of smart signal system technologies. ESSENTIAL DUTIES
- As the working manager of traffic signal engineers and consultants, the position will design traffic signal timing and traffic signal plans, oversee traffic signal timing, operations, and physical design review and approval of nearly 3000 traffic signals in Chicago.
- This position plays a critical role in managing the safe and efficient flow of over a million vehicles, bicycles, and pedestrians on Chicago streets every day.
- The position will manage traffic signal engineers, review and approve signal timings developed by signal engineers.
- The position will independently design traffic signal timing plans and traffic signal requirements for complex intersections.
- The position will also lead traffic signal and intelligent transportation projects, review signal operations with traffic signal engineers, coordinate with maintenance crews, other CDOT divisions, City departments, and external stakeholders.
- This position will facilitate the remote operation of traffic signals and intelligent transportation system field devices.
- Position will monitor real-time data received from the field and third-party sources and use signal performance measures and level of service to prioritize timing improvements.
- Identify areas of concern for traffic safety and traffic flow and coordinate implementation of countermeasures.
- Comprehensive skill in traffic engineering software (Synchro) and computer-aided design (MicroStation).
Graduation from an accredited college or university with a Bachelors degree or higher in Engineering, plus four (4) years of supervisory experience in the planning, design, and construction management of engineering projects.
