About the Position

The Deputy County Counsel III – Litigation serves as a senior litigation attorney for the County of Sonoma, providing legal counsel and representation to county departments and agencies. The role focuses on civil and public law defense, including discovery, trial, appellate work, and Writs. The position is part of the Litigation Practice Group and interacts with the County Operations, Resources, and Environment (CORE) offices and the Health and Human Services department. Key Responsibilities

Prepare and present civil cases before administrative bodies, state and federal courts, and county agencies. Conduct discovery, trial, writ, appellate work, and Public Records Act compliance for county litigation matters. Advises the Human Resources, Sheriff’s Office, Probation, District Attorney, Public Defender, and other county departments on civil litigation matters. Draft ordinances, regulations, contracts, and legal opinions and collaborate with county officials and advisory bodies. Maintain effective relationships with attorneys, staff, county officials, and the public, ensuring high‑quality legal representation. Qualifications

California State Bar membership and a valid driver’s license (as required). Two years of legal experience practicing civil law as a licensed attorney, including at least one year of public agency practice comparable to Deputy County Counsel II, or equivalent private practice experience. Strong research, writing, oral communication, and strategic thinking skills. Demonstrated knowledge and interest in civil litigation, employment and labor law, writs, probate law, land use law, environmental law, administrative law, and related public law areas. Proven ability to work on fast‑moving projects, assume responsibility, and collaborate independently. Benefits
