Payroll Senior Manager (Hybrid) American Family Insurance is seeking an experienced payroll professional to provide technical oversight for bi‑weekly payroll, bonus payments, and payroll taxation across federal, state, and local jurisdictions. The Payroll Senior Manager will lead audit defense, tax planning, vendor management, and continuous process improvement while reporting to the HR Operations Director.

Compensation Position Compensation Range: $99,000 – $167,000. Pay Rate Type: Salary.

Primary Accountabilities

Create a collaborative, performance‑driven work environment by facilitating trust, transparency, and inclusion, and supporting team development.

Lead with influence and expertise, contributing to the division or department leadership team.

Research payroll tax laws and regulations, assessing impacts on the company and working with internal departments.

Oversee creation of bi‑weekly, off‑cycle, and bonus payrolls, including data metrics compilation.

Consult with compensation and benefits to ensure accurate data input, paychecks, taxation, and deduction amounts for active and terminating employees.

Supervise outsourced payroll tax return preparation and review, establishing systematic data validations.

Manage vendor relationships related to payroll.

Collaborate with Accounting to ensure proper financial statement accounting for salary, benefits, and taxation.

Develop strategies to minimize audit adjustments and defend against audits by IRS, state, or local authorities.

Maximize payroll system efficiencies through consistent tools and accurate data inputs.

Specialized Knowledge & Skills Requirements

Demonstrated effective leadership skills.

In‑depth knowledge of federal, state, and local compensation and payroll, and unemployment taxation laws for applicable jurisdictions.

Understanding of Title III of the Consumer Credit Protection Act regarding wage garnishment.

Strong mathematical, communication, and project management skills.

Location & Travel This hybrid role requires working a minimum of 10 days per month from the office. Candidates should reside within 35–50 miles of Madison, WI; Boston, MA; or Minneapolis, MN.
