Payroll Manager
We are a community‑focused specialty retailer in California looking for an experienced Payroll Manager to lead end‑to‑end payroll operations for a diverse workforce across multiple store locations. The candidate will ensure accurate, timely payroll, maintain compliance with California wage‑hour rules, and continuously improve processes.
Base pay range: $70,000.00 – $85,000.00 per year.
Job Details
Own end‑to‑end payroll for a multi‑location retail workforce (hourly + salaried), including regular and off‑cycle runs, corrections, and year‑end processing.
Ensure accurate timekeeping and pay calculations (e.g., overtime, double time, shift differentials, on‑call, holiday, premium pay) and reconcile payroll to the general ledger.
Maintain compliance with California wage‑and‑hour rules (meal/rest premiums, final pay timing, wage statements, sick leave accrual, split shifts, etc.) and coordinate with HR on policy updates.
Lead audit readiness document procedures, conduct periodic internal audits (timecards, adjustments, garnishments), and partner on external audits (e.g., workers’ comp, payroll tax).
Manage payroll systems & integrations (HRIS, timekeeping, POS), champion data cleanliness, troubleshoot imports, mappings, and accrual logic.
Drive process improvement: reduce manual entries, build checklists, automate validations, publish cycle calendars and metrics (error rates, turnaround, cost per paycheck).
Provide service & support: answer pay questions, coach managers on timecard hygiene, deliver training for new features or policies.
Oversee tax & regulatory tasks (registrations, filings, W‑2/W‑3, quarterly reports) in partnership with Finance and outside providers.
5+ years of progressive payroll experience, including California multi‑site, hourly retail or operations environments.
Hands‑on knowledge of California wage‑and‑hour requirements and payroll best practices; FPC/CPP certification is a plus.
Proficiency with a leading payroll/HRIS (e.g., ADP, Paycom, Paylocity, UKG/Kronos) and Excel/Sheets (lookups, pivots, reconciliations).
Proven success building scalable processes, documenting SOPs, and improving cycle accuracy and timeliness.
Strong communication skills and a service mindset; comfortable partnering with store leaders, HR, Finance, and external vendors.
High attention to detail, discretion with confidential data, and a practical, solution‑oriented approach.
